Okee doke. This is getting pretty ridiculous now..
I've spent the last 7 hours.. yers, 7, trying to sort out this frickin' brand new computer.
Arrived yesterday, nice & shiny and stuff. Beauty.

Ah, but what's the problem, you say?

Okee.
Stupidly enough, family were so eager to get on it while I was out. Nothing was installed on it - no Norton.. So they browsed the Internet with no frickin' protection!! Boy, I'm angry.

Anyhoo.

Now the thing is infected with a shed-load of viruses and spyware.. :(

The question is pretty simple, the answer probably is too..
When scanning with Norton Antivirus, it shows a different amount of viruses every single time. At first it was 6, then 11, then 7 and so on. Only problem is, is that I can't delete these viruses! It will only delete 1 or 2 at a time.

Some of the stuff that's coming up are:
sui.exe
delupdat.exe
istactivex.dll
winad[1].exe
winclt[1].exe
bloodhound.packed
spyware.iwantsearch
Adware.Keenval
dialer.target eek!!

..and plenty more. I never knew Adware could be a virus.. :) I need some explaining to.

So.. it obviously messed the computer up because it wouldn't let me download a few things earlier. Stuff like SpyBot Search & Destroy. It's probably a bad program but anything would've helped! It would also close the Internet Explorer on a lot of the 'spyware remover' websites. All other sites were fine! It's like it knew.. Even when I did download something decent, the install screen would only stay for a few seconds then close itself. It did it with everything I tried to install.

PestPatrol has been a real helper. But now that's started playing up..

So.. anybody care to help with the 'why can't I delete the viruses?'?
I'll love you forever.
Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!

Thanks for that number, much appreciated. Always handy just in case!

It was my mum's boyfriend who got his account broken into, not mine. I'm just the one outbidding the others, so hopefully I'll win them. I won't pay, of course! But it saves all the hassle of the other bidders paying, then mum's boyfriend having to put the money back into their accounts. Hope that made sense!

Just get SP2 from PC world if you can, it's the easiest way (unless you've got broadband).

As for Paypal, you can call them on 08707 307 191 if you're worried at all. Better to have the account frozen just in case, as your credit / bank accounts are stored with them.

Just checking though, these laptops, they are being sold via your account?? How do you mean you'd need to outbid them?

Yep, have already installed Spybot. What a fantastic program it is!!
Not yet gotten hold of SP2, will probably do that soon, though.

Nice to find out today, though, that some b*stard managed to get a hold of some passwords.. Probably mine, but I've managed to change all the important stuff. Must change this though, so if weird posts start appearing from me, you'll know why! ;)
Mum's boyfriend - got his eBay hacked or whatever and now someone's messing around selling loads of Alienware laptops! Some have gone over the 1000 mark.. His e-mail's also been taken over and can't get into that. That'll teach him for not listening to me about having the same passwords for everything.. Tuttut. Luckily Paypal require more personal stuff for you to change a password - at least, I hope it's not simple!
Now we just gotta wait for frickin' eBay to reply. For days, most likely.

So I'm just gonna have to outbid everyone! Balls. :(

Nice one :)

Have you managed to get Service Pack 2 from Microsoft yet? If not, try and get this ASAP. If you need to, go to http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/sp2/default.mspx and order it on CD if you can't wait for it to download, or go to your local PC World and ask for it on CD.

Also, have you downloaded ad-aware and Spybot? If not, I'd recommend them. Firefox too.

Wa--hey!

Success! Hopefully you have an idea of how chuffed I'm feeling right now. ;)
The recovery DVD was indeed XP. I honestly thought it was something to do with the DVD-Rom!

1st re-installation of XP was successful, but didn't wipe everything. All programs were still on C drive. 2nd time - perfect!

See.. there aren't many computer buffs in my family, so not quite sure what it'd be like without coming on here getting some very decent advice from people who know what they're doing.

So.. thankyou sooo much guys! :)

Hmm Norton, shove it in your CD Rom and boot from it, see if this useful feature with Norton can as Windows will not be loaded thus meaning it should be able to modify what it wants.
Other than that follow what Phillip said but if its a new PC you should have some sort of Support Team you can phone, see if they can reformat this for you.

Ok, what you need is Ad-aware. This is a fantastic program that you can download for free. It runs a complete system scan, finds anything that shouldn't be there, and gets rid. If it doesn't get rid of it first time then just run it again. Keep using it until it finds nothing and you should find it resolves your problem. You can get it from this page: http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html.

If I ever have to clear a virus from a machine then I will use this. It works every time. Hope this helps.

I concur with Nimco, use the Product Recovery DVD to restore the software on your PC to the state it was at when it was brand new. Make sure it doesn't have an internet connection when it is first powered up, then:

1) Enable the firewall
2) Run Windows Update. If you don't have SP2 (service pack 2), get it.
3) Download either Opera or Mozilla from www.opera.com or www.mozilla.org, and use one or the other as your web browser in place of Internet Explorer.
4) Educate your family (and if necessary, yourself) on the science of not blithely clicking yes to everything on the internet, and not downloading dodgy software.
5) Install antivirus software if you really must.

THe Product Recovery DVD sounds like the ghost disc you need to restore your whole PC.
