DVD is well on the way to becoming the dominant format in home cinema, but can it ever be the only format? Many more people have access to a video player than a DVD one, hence the, still very successful, home video market.

Given some time (and it probably wont be too long) the relationship between DVD and video will be similar to that between CDs and cassettes in the music industry. Most people seem to buy their music on CD but cassettes are still very much available for those that don't have a CD player.

With the massive installed user base of video players can pre-recorded videos ever be phased out completely, forcing people to make the change to DVD?

I have always said that the DVD format was not the best choice for the next generation of films storage and I've still to be proved wrong. It was the best that was available at the time the decision was made, even though there was a far superior format just around the corner (read up on FMDs, if you're interested - assuming they have actually survived the onslaught of interest in DVD), but suppose this format was unveiled and marketed as an eventual successor for DVD - would it survive? Not a chance.

Sony's Minidiscs and Phillips (was it Phillips?) Compact Cassettes were both originally marketed at the next stage in music media and, while the first enjoyed (and still enjoys, to some extent) minor success, the latter vanished without a trace. The user base for the previous two formats was so large that people resented the idea of having three different music formats on the go at once to cater for their existing and future collection.

The same would happen if a change was attempted in the home cinema market. People have all their old films on video and buy all of there new films on DVD while, at the same time, maybe buying some of their existing catalogue on the superior format as and when they see fit (especially if it's a much better product).

DVD video is a great leap forward and deserves the success it has had. However, given comparisons to the music market, it is unlikely to become the only format for a LONG time - if ever.

Don't worry about it - I wanted to find the magazine as well. I'd have probably jumped in and moaned if it was all about someone else so I can't hold a grudge.

I'm still waiting for a full OK from SR but there's no rush. Nobody seems to have found a magazine called 'Film' yet.

I understand the need to investigate. You can't

I'm quite disappointed that no-one has actually replied 'On

Congratulations! And sorry I doubted you!

What a stupid idiot that guy was, a bit obvious in the end he was just jealous!

And to think I wanted to find a magazine that doesn't exist to prove that a great poster was guilty of plagiarism!

God, I have some thinking to do!

I understand the need to investigate. You can't have rules for one person that don't apply to another. I'll wait for the word before I claim anything. Thanks for believeing me guys!

To be stupid enough to look like different people when the tagline changes on historic posts....

Man that's dumb!

I wont be a Newbie for much longer - I've written over 32000 words (5000+ in the last month) across 294 posts (excluding this one).

Wow, thanks guys. Much appreciated comments there.

Not wishing to blow my own trumpet here, but doubters may like to read some of the (also much appreciated) comments in 'Copularity Pontest' in the Future of Gaming forum.

As I said I would, I have today spent much of my lunch hour looking through every film and DVD magazine that I can find in WH Smiths and didn't see one called 'Film'. There was a Total Film and a Film Review though so I concentrated on them first.

I looked through them (particularly around the 'page 45' area) and saw nothing. Just a couple of articles on The Mummy Returns (also on the cover of some of them), a couple of player reviews and an advert featuring a quite attractive girl with an impressive cleavage (so thanks for moaning!).

I'd love to see this 'original article'. Here's a bet I'm willing to make. If what I wrote is word for word the same (and I mean word for word, as the accusation stated) I will give out each of my previous Filmaday wins (There's Something About Mary, The World is Not Enough and The Sixth Sense as well as the as-yet-unclaimed one from about a fortnight ago) to anyone on these boards who wants them (one per poster only - you've got to have rules).

What I've said stands: I didn't copy anything. If SR don't believe me then fine, I'll accept that. I'll give it a week or so and if nothing has changed on the winners list than I'm claiming something.

End of story.

I agree with Jeremy (errrr.... the game)

I've spken to SK a few times on Messenger and he's seemed like a ncie guy. He's won GAD before with a few good posts and topics that were original and clever.

This is his fifth win, the fact that he has one 5 times shows that he can write winning pieces, he doesn't have to copy pieces to win.

So why would he wanna start now? He's said he will give up his prize when not many people would. I respect him for that, you lot should as well. He's an honest guy who will accept a prize withdrawl.

I honestly don't believe he has copied the piece.

I'm with SK on this one, I don't know him too well but he doesn't seem like the kinda guy to cheat. He might be a newbie but he is still respected by me and many others.

If you can, find the FILM On-line website if there is one, see if you can find the article. SK has said that he will forfeit the prize if the two are similar and I respect him for that.

I don't think you should blow this out of proportion. If his prize goes to someone else, so be it, but don't have a beny at him because freak co-incidence.

He contributes more to this site that a lot of people!

Show a little respect
