This will probably be trashed’n’flamed… (and… lets be honest… with good cause)… :)… Never the less…

Consoles are dying… The next generation systems will probably be the last generation of consoles to be produced for about 10 years. Though fantastic machines coming packaged with custom chips, innovative design, even with a company philosophy. People hold to their consoles as adamantly as they will hold true to their football teams…

Consoles are limited, ultra-safe machines. Once the newest gen console has been brought, little can be done with them that could not be done with the previous range. It may have nicer graphics, but at the end of the day, the limitations of the machines input and output capabilities make it unable to adequately handle Gaming Genres that are universally considered standard game types. The PC has born, raised and killed many a genre that never saw the light of day on a console (not because of lack of system spec… but because of lack of input spec)

The Future…

Well… It all happened in the eighties… and it’s on the middle of happening now… consoles are changing… evolving… And… Even though Sony claim their strategy is to develop the complete ‘entertainment system’ … All consoles are converting back to their computer roots…

Its important to note here… that I don’t mean consoles are becoming IBM style PC’s…

I mean it to be closer to the more dramatic evolution from Atari to Spectrum, Intellivision to C64…

The difference between primarily gaming computers and IBM PC’s is slight… theoretically there may be no difference at all… but to anyone who participated in the 8-bit/16-bit era, the difference between their machines and IBM PC’s is a very large and very obvious.

This change can be seen to be beginning already… with Keyboards, Mice, Hard drives all being released for consoles… coming as standard to consoles, etc…

Well… almost… Nintendo with their GC seem to be sticking to the gaming style of old… their not adding mice, Hard Drives…

Is this philosophy completely foolish or inspirational genius?

Well… to be honest… I don’t have a clue… but I really hope they do…???

What would you rather play… for the sake of comparison… imagine the PS and X-Box become the equivalent of the current iMacs,

Would you prefer?

iMac : costing 299.99 and has 10-30 games released per month
GC : costing ??? 150? And has 10-30 games released per month

i think that sony have got some excelent games for the playstation like driver and tomb raider the playstiation has pruduced some reall classics.
my favorite would have to be driver .
the only downside to the playstation is that they hardly make any more games.
there also a damned site cheaper than n64 games wich range from about £60 to about £20.
but most playstation games start at about £30 apart from one or two priced ad £70 for each disk cos theres about 40 od disks to the game if anyone could tell me the game name i would be pleased if you corrected me.
The ps2 hoever has much better graphics than the ps1 but the awesome power of the ps2 power is spoiled by some really crapy games.
they havent made a game that shows the full potentiall yet but im sure thay will.
The games are pretty good value to starting at about £40-£30,wich is about the price of the ps1 games. and there arent many games for the ps2 either i think theres about 30
So Sony Do NOT GO PLEASE NO!!!!!

After drinking a glass of cola during his game of SSX, Beef feels the need to urinate.

He checks the calendar.

5 months since the launch of the PS2.

Beef stands above his console and unzips his trousers, he takes on final glance at the television displaying the Game Over screen.

He proceeds to urinate on his console........

Cheers PB... (and thanks for telling me! :) )

I think the problem of mass marketing isnt due to Sonys flood tactics... more that... people as used to buying electircal goods and keeping hold of them until they break down... Like TV's, Videos, etc...

And this is where the popularity lies... I know a lot of causal gamers who were really annoyed to discover they had to buy another console... and didnt really understand why...

In general I've found the 30 and below age group who have 'pretty much' grown up with computers on TV, in the lounge and their bedrooms have less of a problem with this... especially since they have a great deal more disposable income than the 30+ age group had...

This I think is one of the main reasons for a slump in sales... somethig which wont be such a problem as the current generation ages...

Don't get me wrong, Sony

aye... fair play...

Do you think this is a Sony only problem of a global console situation? ... I mean... even though it may have been Sonys dodgy launch of the PS2 that has put a number of people off buying... does this only affect Sony or will it throwback to all consoles?

All this

aye...

I agree... I cant imgaine consoles moving completly away from the mainstream (At least I hope they dont)... However there not the new toy (since the general public always seem to forget aything from more than a year ago)

but I suspect that after a break... when consoles come back with the next big thing

To go back to the original post, congratulations by the way for winning Armatage, I think that gaming has reached a peak with the general public and we are now seeing the side effects of Sony's mass market approach to selling consoles.

Don't get me wrong, Sony knew what they were doing, they saw a gap in the market and took action, finding a more consumer-friendly approach to consoles and selling loads of playstations because of it. This isn't new, by the way, Sinclair did exactly the same with the Spectrum, leaving the BBC micro to gather support from education instead and allowing Commodore to sell massive amounts of their C64 through the same medium as Sinclair.

Now the market has been flooded with advertising, it starts to become less effective and the sales slow down. Negative attitudes to the PS2 from the feedback of customers who had problems with the hardware or can't find new games mean that Sony has to, and will, fight their way back again.

All this means is that it will pick up again, but only when the GC and Xbox are released and Sony has some competition again, so the media battles can begin again and get people excited once more.

Don't forget, many people only know what they read in the papers or see on TV and the media frenzy has now died down. For us it's still an exciting time as we hear new news on the various consoles and games and actually understand the trends and the technology. This is how it has always been and the cycle will revolve again, games will never be seen quite in the same way as they used to in the 80s, as toys for kids or only for geeks, but they may not be quite so popular as they have been over the last 5 years.
