I thought I'd make a post about them because I like them.

Here are the rumours in brief:

Regarding Mario 128 and Zelda.

. Nintendo tried to re-invent the franchises with Sunshine and Wind Waker. Failing to do so has upset the company but they have given into public demand and created a more mainstream set of titles.

. Mario 128 will be more nostalgic, featuring areas and enemies consistant with the Mario series.

. Zelda will go for the dark adventure look it has always promised to be. Giving a nod towards Lord of the Rings on the way.

Regarding Revolution.

. Since Nintendo invested in Gyro technology it is assumed Gyro controllers will be used. These controllers allow for motion control gaming.

. These controllers won't be wireless initially, Nintendo are developing such an idea though.

. Broadband from the box with online a standard. DS will launch Nintendo's online service but Revolution will follow. Square-Enix are Nintendo's unlikely partner here.

. DS will not link to Revolution. The future Gameboy Evolution probably will.

. The system is backwards compatible with the Gamecube.

. The unit itself will have four controller ports, a hard drive, and support for high-resolution displays and Dolby Digital 5.1 channel surround sound

. The system will also use dual processors.

. There is more "revolutionary" features to come but not even the rumour-mill would give these up due to Sony and Microsoft copying.

. The Revolution will us HD-DVD. The cheaper competitor to Blu-Ray. It isn't as large as Blu Ray but it does use existing hardware allowing both the console and the games to be produced cheaper. It also means DVD playback is likely. It is still roughly 4 times larger than normal DVD.

. Mario game and Smash Brothers will launch the system. A Zelda game is already being worked on.

Sounds pretty good. Glad to see HD-DVD being used. If Microsoft use it too then it'll make the HD-DVD Vs. Blu Ray fight very interesting.

I think it is a shame Nintendo aren't so keen to experiment with existing franchises. But its nice to get a consistant set of sequels and this may encourage Nintendo to develop new franchises rather than fiddle with old ones.

Thoughts?

Here's to the future.

Dringo.

May 17th-20th.

Not that long away.

Just found the link: http://www.e3expo.com/e3expo/

Apparently if we had a Business Ad (with business card) we could get in.

Sony (and obviously MGM which it owns), Fox and Disney are supporting Blu-Ray.

Universal, Paramount, Warner Bros and New Line are supporting HD-DVD. My money's easily on HD-DVD.

It's almost 4 months, that's one third of a year, that's too long.

Excuse me for being a bit clueless towards this 'blu ray' and HDDVD thing but....

Isn't Blu Ray a new form of technology that uses a blue laser to read from these special 'blu ray' discs?

And HD-DVD is a compressed DVD with much more capacity that can be read by traditional red light dvd players?

If this is right, then surely 'blu ray' will fail because of two reasons: -

1. You have to get a new player to play these things. It might sound obvious, but the DVD format at the current moment in time is still young! It might seem ages since it first came out (1999?) but people are still only just moving over and getting a DVD player for their house. This Blu Ray lark will most likely be extremely expensive, people are only just forking out for a DVD player because they are cheap and extremely popular.

2. As stated above, it'll be expensive.

Blu-Ray will take a while to get going, but DVD's took off because it was in the PS2.

DVD is already outdated, if you have the right equipment you can watch friday night with Jonathan Ross in better quality than the Matrix movies. There needs to be more space so Blu-Ray and HD-DVD were devised.

You'll need a new player for both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray but HD-DVD uses existing hardware so will cost less. DVD's can also run off a HD-DVD player far easier and cheaper as the same laser is used. Whilst Blu-Ray uses a different laser and will need a second one to run DVD's. More money.

Blu-Ray though is much... much... much bigger.

DVD's were set to take off, with or without the PS2.

Basically, the offered better quality than VHS AND you never have to rewind again. Now what does Blu-Ray offer over DVD?
Lord of the Rings will now fit on just one disc?

It's as pointless as trying to make DVD's the new standard for music to replace CD's. The DVD has settled now and it'll be a good few years atleast before people are ready to chop and change again.

Give over! The public chop and change like the weather.
People buy a new phone and within weeks a better one is released and people change to the new one. A computer is made, people buy it, a better one comes along and they change to the new one. Its the same with cars, T.Vs, consoles, cameras etc etc etc.
This is a 'must have' world and the consumer is king. bah!

HD-TV is already out there, a few Blu-Ray and HD-DVD systems have launched and alot more are being put out this year. Like DVD it'll take a while to catch on (and no, the fact it did had virtually nothing to do with the PS2) but in a couple of years I think we'll see many people have already upgraded.

The problem with Blu-Ray is that it can't be a replacement for DVD players, because it won't play your DVDs, so you'll have to have a DVD player AND a Blu-Ray player if you want to play your full film collection.

Not to mention that People don't necessarily care about better quality, if DVDs are cheaper. No doubt Sony Disney MGM etc (who don't actually make a large amount of films) will still produce DVDs. So if you buy a Blu-Ray player you can't play DVDs but you can play SOME films. If you get a HD-DVD player you can play every film.

It seems obvious to me that people won't go for Blu-Ray. HD-DVD is an upgrade with backwards compatibility.

Oh and for the record, both formats use blue lasers, but the HD DVD lasers can read DVDs as well.
