Hello folks and folkettes, I'm thinking of getting a laptop in time for going to uni as it seems as if it will be massively handy and useful to me - though having never owned a laptop I'm not really sure what sort of thing I am looking for.

I want something that is functional, but not particularly brilliant as it isnt going to be a games machine - I will be using it solely for work as will want the basic programmes - MS Office, Web Browser & capabilities (inc network card and ethernet connection, UBS or PS/2 connection for a mouse, enough room for plenty of files (probably between 10 and 20 gb) disk drive & writer and the other basics.

As I am not going to want to run anything fancy on it, I assume the specs for the machine will be lower and as such it will be cheaper.

I currently have a budget of around £400 but I can muster about £800 before I go to uni.

Can someone please give me a basic idea of the sort of specs I will need and the price range I am looking at. Also any decent retailers (on and offline)

Thanks a lot.

Not at all. An iBook is a laptop, at least in my classification. I never said I wanted a PC or Mac one :-)

SR do some nice laptops for your price range. They also offer 6 months 0% finance, therefore you can pay the £400 now and the rest within the first 6 months (After that it gets pricey :P).

The coolest ISP ever!
In my opinion, the ISP is the best I have ever used. They guarantee 'first time connection - everytime', which they have never let me down on.
I am delighted.
Brilliant! As usual the careful and intuitive production that Freeola puts into everything it sets out to do. I am delighted.
