Hello folks and folkettes, I'm thinking of getting a laptop in time for going to uni as it seems as if it will be massively handy and useful to me - though having never owned a laptop I'm not really sure what sort of thing I am looking for.

I want something that is functional, but not particularly brilliant as it isnt going to be a games machine - I will be using it solely for work as will want the basic programmes - MS Office, Web Browser & capabilities (inc network card and ethernet connection, UBS or PS/2 connection for a mouse, enough room for plenty of files (probably between 10 and 20 gb) disk drive & writer and the other basics.

As I am not going to want to run anything fancy on it, I assume the specs for the machine will be lower and as such it will be cheaper.

I currently have a budget of around £400 but I can muster about £800 before I go to uni.

Can someone please give me a basic idea of the sort of specs I will need and the price range I am looking at. Also any decent retailers (on and offline)

Thanks a lot.

And willing to buy one?

It's not cheap, but far better than it's current price.

Speaking of laptops, does anyone want to buy my Alienware? It's really good.

I got an Iridium one (like here from SR) dirt cheap and got more than what SR offered.

It's all about the Starbooks, they're great.

Not really very 'laptopish' though, uses sooooo much battery power and isn't that light.

But I want a portable desktop replacement, not a tiny sh*tty slow thing.

Go for the IBM Thinkpad T22, like I got.

900MHz Processor, Win98SE, 20Gb disk space and 256 of ram.

I got minr for £165 (I think it's hot), but you'll ave to pay, like, £300 on Ebay for it, tops.

eBay is indeed your best bet for a laptop in the range you seem to want.

Theres loads of refurb ones on there for around £400 with very decent specs.

PC World do have some good offers on laptops though, thats where I got this baby from.

That looks fairly decent to me - other opinions please?

An iBook is probably better for what I want (from what I know), but I want to find out more about them first.

The specs for an iBook and a laptop are pretty paralell anyway, it's just the way the machine works that is different.

It looks nice but I don't need a DVD-R etc etc and all the fancy stuff. I will certainly consider it though.
