Younever know! After all, on messenger you have to know the peoples e-mail adresses, on IRC you can meet new people you haven't spoken to before!

There is no limit to how many people you can talk to in IRC, the only limits are practical limatations depending on what client you use, and how many you can cope with talking to at once.
It's hard for IRC networks to compete with the likes of Microsoft, but the fact you get much more of a sense of community on an IRC network than you ever can on MSN Messenger will ensure the popularity of IRC for ever - regardless of how advanced these messengers become.

Like any applet - give it time to load. What platform/browser are you running it on? How long are you leaving it for? Does your computer really crash - I have never EVER known that happen! Is your system usually stable? Any help you provide can help us to determine why it isn't working for you.
Did you try the CGI client alternative? ( http://uk.centralchat.net/cgi-bin/chatw.cgi?channel=specialreserve ) even if the java applet doesn't work for you, that will.
