The desktop loads up fine, and the two norton logos load up in the system tray, but my LAN connection icon doesnt - and also if I try and perform just about any function the computer crashes.
I can't perform a system restore, add/remove programme or anything like that because it crashes when I try to do it. I have tried safe mode, but I cannot remove programs in safe mode, or edit the startup (I dont think).
I have absolutely no idea what the problem is, and likewise no idea what to do about the problem. Any help is going to be hugely appreciated.
I'll stand by the following recommendations as a kick ass combination. 2 of them are free too...
ZoneAlarm Pro (Trial available)
AVG Antivirus (Free)
Ad-Aware (Free)
Those 3 are all you'll ever need for Internet Security.
> Norton is crap..
I want to agree, but what to use instead?
> Norton is crap..
Not if you use it properly.
*thrusts*
I unchecked the Norton and symantech stuff in the services tab of msconfig and also unchecked them from running on startup (Whilst in safe mode), then rebooted into regular mode (without them interfering), and was able to uninstall them.
If so, that's exactly what I got and it was after installing McAffee. I ended up having to format and start from scratch I'm afraid.
I ended up formatting. You don't need the desktop to be able to do it, you just need to run the computer in the commandprompt mode, use the command format C: and you're away. You'll need your Windows disc handy, basically, you just run the format, restart and stick the disc in and it should start installing Windows. If it doesn't, you'll need to edit your BIOS settings (typically DEL when you first turn it on) to get it to boot from the CD drive before the HD.
Hope that made sense.
Oh, what Windows are you using? Because XP makes it a little more complicated to get to a command prompt from what I remember.
