I got charged with a parking fine a few nights ago, and I'm very displeased because well, there aren't any signs anywhere near where I parked to even say what you had to do (you needed some sort of permit, apparently)

So I've decided to appeal, and I thought I'd share the letter I've written to them with you. I had fun with this.

------------

Dear Sir or Madam,

Unfortunately, I have received a penalty, to which I must pay twenty five pounds on what I believe to be uncertain grounds.

I would like to appeal against the fine by stating of no visible sign which told of the charge and what is demanded by the terms and conditions and what is commanded. The corner that in which I did park had no machine or prices or kindly remarks, of the sticker now needed to be displayed in your car, (which I found out later from a sign from afar).

I drive from Wales to see my friends, (which beats the train to Audley End), and occasionally I like to see, with all my friends, a new movie. The petrol money from my journey reaches quite a hefty sum, and it’s taken really quite a while to save my earnings so I could come. To be charged this fee fills me with rage, for the fine will take almost two day’s wage. I hope you reply in time for me, for I’d work four days for the late paid fifty.

At the time I parked I believe that I’d done nothing wrong to leave my car without a permit, so allow me to submit my plea that there was no sign for me to see, and while with no real or obvious indication, I still must state that no dispensation I did judge. I do mean however to adjudge that the notice’s placed around the park are misplaced and are hard to see, (in night I’d imagine, especially).

The park in question (I had not mentioned) is the closest area near the cinema that one can stop and leave their car without having to walk that far. Can not a simple charge be ordered to make the park (in Bishops Stortford) an easier place to see a movie without having to receive a fee?

Please consider my position and I hope that your volition will take heed my ignorance and my omission in acquisition of the sign, and in addition bare recognition the bad condition of the notices of prohibition for those that may receive a fine.

If that is the case then you will have no problem getting the fine revoked.

Aye, but I'm sure your fines are fair and justly given. As absolutely lazy as I am to stand up and moan about things, this really was ridiculous, there were NO signs whatsoever where I parked telling me of what I needed to obtain to park there. It's stupid.

I could imagine that

'IF YOU FECKERS EVER TOUCHED MY CAR AGAIN, YOU SHALL BE P*SSING BLOOD FOR THE NEXT 3 YEARS, YOU GOT THAT, YOU WORTHLESS, OBESE PIG!?'

Is the fine from the council or is it a private place?

My mate got his car clamped one night we were out by some private place who claimed that we were parked in there area and that by law they could clamp the car till the fine was payed.

There was no sign near by and although there were some spaces painted on the road near where we had parked we weren't parked in one.
Decided to call the police and told them that our car had been illegaly clamped and it turns out that it had been clamped outside their zone - something that they were doing quite often and people were just paying...

In the end my mate got compensation for damage done to his tyres by the clamp.

The borough in which I live has the most parking fines upturned in the whole of London.. Something like 80% of fines get upturned after an appeal.

While on appeal you're fine should be frozen and shouldn't go onto the late paid charge.

Best check it with them though.

Won't make a bit of difference - my dad has tried twice to do similar, you'll get a standard reply which barely acknowledges the details, and that they'll investigate, regardless of what you say you will eventually have to pay up all the same.
