I'm still unsure about university courses in general, whether it's my sixth form that havent told us enough or just a big country-wide mystery I do not yet know, but I'm hoping some of you nice people can answer my questions.
First of all, if I major in one subject but take another one (say Journalism with criminology), what would my lessons be like? Would I do more journalism lessons than criminology lessons, or would they be 50/50 and just my mark that is split 75/25 ?
This leads me onto my next point, is it easier to take just one single subject, ie just plain Journalism. Would this mean I had less lessons overall, or would the fact I'm not taking more lessons mean I had to take more classes?
When looking at courses there seem to be the same courses ar different universities, only some courses require different ucas points to get in. Are the higher point courses more lucrative, or will they be much the same?
Moving away from university lectures now, I want to know about student accomodation. Is it better to get on-campus accomodation for the first year and move in with friends after this? Also, it's not been mentioned whether we pay our own electricity bills etc if we stay on campus, or if its covered in the rent or whatever it is we pay.
Is the first year as easy as most people make out it is? In the case that it is easy, would you advise me to get a job during the first year to make up some money towards my debt and take advantage of my free time?
I'm still quite confused about exactly what I want to do in life, but I think journalism could be fun. If I never end up using my degree I still feel I should go to uni just for the experience.
So help me out and post reassuring comments, or add your own angst-filled panick statements - whatever's good for you.
"oooh"
Quinty, will you be starting a journalism course in 2005 too?

Ha!
Don't even think of it, it's not even a real university!
'Tis a Micky Mouse university.

Read last post!

Exactly, plus you don't have to pay it back if you're not earning enough, if you die it goes too. Hint! hint! :cp Plus if you become a teacher they cancel it for you.

Sheffield is the best one there, although the city is a complete lump of crap. Makes me feel much better about where I live when I see places like that!

Exactly why I wouldn't stay at home, I don't go out with anyone on my course, everyone I go out with and will do I've met in my halls.
You have to go into halls if you go to uni, if you don't then you're going to get so bored by yourself.
Self catered halls are no way as good to socialise in either as catered halls. With catered you're going to dinner every day and meeting people so you can talk to everyone.
I'm not the kind of person to go around talking to anyone and everyone just to get to know them, yet at the end of this year, out of 240 people I'd talked to about 150 of them and were 'friendly' with about 50 of them.
As long as you haven't got the kind of personality that will attract too much attention to you (you become like Marmite* if you do) you'll always get on with most people, I had about 2 people I thought were complete d*cks, however I don't think anyone 'hated' me as I didn't do anything to warrant it.

Crazy.
> Lincoln
Hmmm, i'm looking at a Journalism course there...theres too many around though to be honest.
It's £12900 a year, plus quarterly performance bonus, 20 mins from where I live, air conditioned, parking and free net access/Ps2 consoles/Xbox's/new PC gear in the restaurant and cafes, which suits me fine.
I really needed something to supplement my rather crap C for IT at GCSE (like that was accurate) so at the worst this is a good experience to get.
Start mid-July. so since June I've been the laughably entitled "Jobseekers Allowance" which is basically free money, plus by lucky coincidence I was coming up for an eyeishgt check and new frames/lenses so I got the test free and about £100 off the cost of the glasses.
All in all I'm a happy person right now :D
whats the job chief?
