I'm not one to seek advice from strangers but I really need some help making up my mind here.

I'm not sure what course to do at university - I can take one of two routes, which are:

1. Journalism

2. Creative writing / Script writing

I feel more inclined towards the second category as I feel I woudld enjoy it more, though I think it is probably a harder area to get into and harder to find work in, whilst journalism can apply to papers, magazines and e-zines, all which pay decent wages.

I know everything isnt about money, though I'd like to have the security of knowing a job would be easily availible.

Give me some advice, please.

If it was me, I'd also go for the second option, but only you know what you really want to do, it's not the kind of thing anyone else can advise you on.

I have no respect for the common journalist excluding foreign correspondents and that's about the only journalistic career I would ever take part in, merely for the chance to go abroad. Creative writing sounds a lot like the better choice, but there is less guarantee of income and success in it. That aside, I would recommend no. 2

Edit - "common" journalist being the types that work for papers such as the Mail, hypocritical, schemimg, twisted etc. Some bits of it would be alright eg film/product reviews, but it would be a bit monotonous compared with no.2

I would opt for Number 1.
It's the sounder option for a career and easier to swap to option 2 with later in life than vice versa.

Journalism also leaves the path for magazine writing open, which would be a laugh if I got to write for FHM or something.

now that would be excellent.

"today lads, we're trying out all the major beer brands, Jo Guest is popping over later for a naked photoshoot, and tomorrow we fly off to portugal to cover the Euro 2004 final"

Photography is the better option in that scenario.

Or you could just become a pro footballer and porn star...

The decision? It seems you're stuck between pursuing your dreams and playing it safe for better career prospects in a job you don't really want to do.

I recommend option 1. You have a dream, option 1 can get you there, journalism won't help nearly so much.
Don't give up now!

(Also, you could look into whether a creative writing degree would help you get into journalism later. I'd have thought it'd be nearly as good a quaification as the journalism degree, and if you enjoy it more you might get a higher grade too).
