Prescription: The Lost Riots by Hope of the States is a good album, you should try 'The Black Amnesias', 'The Red the white the black the blue', '66 sleepers to summer', 'George Washington' and 'Black Dollar Bills' if you get the chance.

And as for recommendations - try some of Mel Tormé's songs. They're a type of slow jazz - his voice is excellent.
