Watching SkySports News earlier, I see their latest 'Yes/No' Interactive Vote is whether or not David Beckham should remain our regular penalty-kick taker after that miss against France on Sunday.

First of all, the majority of all votes went in his favour.
But then, the greater percentage edged over to 'No'.
And now.... Sorry, I don't know!

But, I did "waste" 25p+ on a text message voting in favour of a new spot-kick taker. Someone more accustomed to goal-scoring and driving the ball down the middle - much like Alan Shearer - rather than going for poncey old placement.

To tell you the truth, I've never really understood why he was chosen for any reason other than for the 'BS' and hype Sven-Goran Eriksson buys into, anyway! His free-kicks may be immaculate and he is captain, but does that
make him the ideal choice as "fans' favourite"?

I can't think of a single time he took on for Man. United OUTSIDE of a Charity Shield game. There was that one-time while he was on-loan at Preston a decade ago, and then there was that "Jonny Wilkinson" against Turkey - that's all I can recall before France.

Paul Scholes can really hit them. Michael Owen's our No.1 for finishing. When playing, Frank Lampard's had a 100% record for Chelsea this past season. I'm sure Steven Gerard could do the right thing when called upon. Wayne Rooney's fast-becoming everybody's favourite, and I'm sure even David James would know exactly where to put the ball...

I'm after your opinions on this matter, please. And, at 'no-price-to-pay', I'm after more than just a simple 'Yes' or 'No' answer, thanks.

Should David Beckham still be taking penalty kicks for England?

If not, who would you choose and why?

-----

Also, their are two opinions (as ever in these big games) as to what 'that' actually was.

In your opinion, was it a good save from Fabien Barthez, or, simply, a crap penalty from David Beckham?

As arrogant Englishman who are likely to stand behind their nonced-up Pop Idolic leader, I'd expect the major part of this country to be applauding "Broken-Nose" Barthez for his heroics, whatever the final result.

What do YOU think?

yeaqh it was an optomistic half decent, but at least it wasn't straight doen the middle like his usual one.

Got to disagree about the french penalty being half decent. As an ex keeper i'd have loved a penalty like that, as long as you guess the right way that's getting saved every single time. Perfect height for the keeper to just palm away, had a bit of pace but that was the only positive thing about it.

Beckham's Peno's even the ones he scores are crap!

DAVID YOU ARE 12 YARDS OUT! NOT 30! YOU DON'T NEED TO TRY AND CURL IT!

HE always does it, and although the france peno was half decent, they are always about five foot away from the keeper as they start curling they are useless. All the best penalty takers belt it in dead straight lines towards the sides of the goal. Look at shearer, le tiss, even zidane. Get over yourself beckham let some one else hit it.

the way i look at it, only 3 players it the squad can actualy strike a ball cleanly in our squad with power and conviction (ie rocket shots): Lampard, Scholes (though he is trying to hide it at the mo! lol but i am sure the scholes of old is still there waiting to re-emerge) and i suspect Rooney.BAsically that leaves Lampard and Scholes as the likely takers, and Lampard has been taking them at chelsea and strikes them well, he is also the in form player. I'd put lampard on the job myself

I agree, and as I stated when the squad was selected, Butt shouldn't have been included, and Parker should have. If not Parker, then by all means give Thompson a go. But not Butt, his last two Premiership seasons have been lacking everything.

Frank should have taken that peno as he was confident from scoring and can take some good peno's.

Nicky Butt's a pretty awful player, of near Heskey proportions. I haven't seen Thompson about before, and I don't pretend to be a footy expert (aside from international games which I usually watch) but it wouldn't take a lot to offer more than Butt. I can't see him making it back as a regular player after his injury.

So that's my pretty useless two-cents if anyone cares...

To be fair though Alan Thompson was a bit of a laughing stock at Villa, hence the move north of the border.

Nuff said really.
