Southgate, Birmingham City's Matthew Upson, Scott Parker of Chelsea, Defoe, Smith and Everton's Richard Wright have been placed on stand-by.

For all you Defoe fanatics, Jermain is on standby, so if anything was to happen to one of the England strikers, he would be the obvious replacement.

Meanwhile, I feel smug, seeing how Sven chose Darius Vassell over Jermain Defoe and all. :D

Lol fool he is irish :P.. and defoe has done alright but nothing much lastseason he has the talent but with spurs he didn't stand out that much because of their relegation battle last season (03/04 yep it's finished don't forget) and all he did for West ham was get sent off.
We will see whether he is any better next season, playing well, scoring and whether spurs struggle again.

And I migfht of over exagerrated about the Milner/Rooney thing, but there is no way in which Rooney should make the team instead of someone like Defoe
