This will primarily be for placing programming demos on the internet for me to show to emplyers, of work I have done on the PC and PS2. The main aim is to help me get a job.
Do I need to have freeola to get the free web hosting??
I have a blueyonder modem, and don't want to purchase something I can't use.
Is this service available to those without a freeola connection, the website doesn't seem particularly clear on the matter.
one whould imagine that phi11ip has more than just a website hosted by staghosting...
this is my reason:
This post has been edited by phi11ip on Apr 13 2004, 01:28 PM
this was found in the "how to sign up area"
hmmm...
the name says Ben and he is admistrator of forum and his homepage is...
www.STAGHOSTING.com
now either the owner ----> "phi11ip" is covering up his website with www.phi11ip.com or that magically apeared from absolute nowhere because the owner "Ben" may have oopppps accidently added his name...
so theres just one question for MR.phi11ip here...
DO YOU OWN STAGHOSTING?? or ARE YOU A MODERATOR or anything remotly to do with www.STAGHOSTING.com???
oh yhea for PROOF! vist http://hdolz.url.cjb.net/ or http://hdolz.url.cjb.net/
tell the truth!!
if you do own it then it seems you have won a game for advertising...
i guess you used staghosting for hosting.
i have never bought a domain or hosting or nuffing before.
i guess its just like this: (correct if wrong)
buy domain,
tell staghosting your site,
upload html's etc,
done.
sounds a bit dodgy and simple but thats the idea i was given by freinds.
> How does this hosting work as free?
You don't pay for it.
> Surely any decent hosting comes with a charge??
Nope, it's funded by a corporate events company.
> Where's the catch with this one?
You display a couple of small text links on the index page of your site, I've got 4 of them on mine.
The links link to other sites that the company runs which then gives them a higher page rank in Google.
Search for 'Coporate Event' in Google, Actiondays.co.uk is one of the sites.
Ignore the limits too, if you want extra space/bandwidth you can have it. Just ask.
Oh, and if you don't trust Ukreg, go with 123reg.co.uk.
They give you full support of the domain so you can change your own nameservers without paying and it's nice and cheap.
URL forwarding doesn't work perfectly though, the site URLs will still appear as being Blueyonder pages unlike if you were to change the nameservers and get a proper hosting account from Staghosting.
My site's hosted there, Specialobserve is hosted there, there's loads of sites hosted there.
Nice and easy and I can make my own web page without having the hassle of hosting with a company which I am a little dubious about, and don't have to pay through the nose for hasting features that I don't really need.
I can get a domain registered for 2 years for less than £10 with URL forwarding, so I can have my domain name which forwards a link to my blueyonder pwp sapce.
All is good :D
It's only 30mb, but it'll do what I need it too, just :D
If I get really desperate I cn pay an extra £4 for a 100mb pwp space, or go with an external hosting service.
Was nice of you to point me towards ukreg.com, but as they are not registered with nominet, I think I'll give them a miss too. Their terms and conditions state that they retain some things which I don't think nominet would agree with :)
Also, I'd be very interested in seeing your work. I'm looking to work in the games industry as an audio programmer, but I'm also a freelance web designer and I'll probably be putting audio work up at some stage too.

Staghosting is actually very good. Don't ask me why they don't charge, but they don't. Its not even as if they have a paid service so they can use the free services as an attaction for more paying customers (like www.portland.co.uk). Still, can complain.
Surely any decent hosting comes with a charge??
Where's the catch with this one?
Here's what you should do:
Register a domain:
www.ukreg.com
Get a beefy free no adverts hosting package:
www.staghosting.com
Tell me if you want the hosting and I'll get you a decent account set up.
Doing it this way saves you absolutely loads per year if you take into account Freeola's high domain costs and the fact that you have to pay to access your webspace.
