Is a short novel by Richard Matheson. It was the inspiration for Romero's 'Dead' trilogy, as well as an appalling Charlton Heston flick "The Omega Man".

The basics of the plot: There is only one man left alive on earth. Every other man, woman, and child on earth is a vampire. The book details the protagonist's life (such as it is), a few of his memories of the world as it was, and that is literally it.

Sounds like not much doesn't it? Well, you'd be wrong. It's one of the most brilliantly bleak, strangely moving (the chapter where he finds a dog and tries to gain it as a companion had my crying like a big soft lump of geordie poo), and compelling books I've ever read. It'll take up maybe half an hour of your life to read it, and it would be half an hour well spent.

This book has been the subject of many topics in this forum, which is a good thing by the way and testament to the sheer brilliance of it. A short novel of epic intensity.

White Zombie did a song about the novel- the intro on the song is as bleak as the book sounds.
