Is a short novel by Richard Matheson. It was the inspiration for Romero's 'Dead' trilogy, as well as an appalling Charlton Heston flick "The Omega Man".

The basics of the plot: There is only one man left alive on earth. Every other man, woman, and child on earth is a vampire. The book details the protagonist's life (such as it is), a few of his memories of the world as it was, and that is literally it.

Sounds like not much doesn't it? Well, you'd be wrong. It's one of the most brilliantly bleak, strangely moving (the chapter where he finds a dog and tries to gain it as a companion had my crying like a big soft lump of geordie poo), and compelling books I've ever read. It'll take up maybe half an hour of your life to read it, and it would be half an hour well spent.

He did say something about a terrible curse but too be honest I've got bigger problems. I'm having to push my enormous testicles along to the Doctors in a wheelbarrow, just like that guy from the comic. One day they were fine, the next they're the size of two space hoppers.

that's not second hand you fiend, you lifted that off that poor starving quadraplegic romanian boy, whose only pleasure in life was his book.

how do you sleep at night?

I've seen the movie, but if the book is, like, totally better, then I might get it too.

Yup. My bro had it, and I've read it numerous times (as you say, it takes about half an hour to read)

Excellent, and I *love* the ending. It's a deserved classic, although some of the science is a little ropey. ;)

It's an excellent book. I read it after seeing another post on here. That whole SF Masterworks series is good in fact, especially because I didn't used to think science fiction was much cop.

For the first couple of pages I thought it was going to be rubbish because the prose was just so bare but it gets quite hypnotic after a while and it really suits the story.

Which reminds me, must dig book out again. Something or other stopped me from continuing the story, I got just over half way through it.

Great, great book though. Glad I bought it - and I wouldn't have, if it wasn't for the topics previously posted, recommending it and the like.

Kudos on your choice of book, I love it. The film 'the omega man' was frankly terrible though.

and we have had about 10 topics on this book in the past few months.
