How much do you charge to build a PC for someone?

Just out of interest.

Its not just that its the bits and the pipelines as well. The 5200 is a 128bit card with 4x1 pipeline. Now a 9600 Pro has the same bits and pipeline as the 5200 and has a 400 mhz core and 300 mhz memory while the 9600 XT has a 500 mhz core.

On the other hand a 9800 Pro is faster than a 9600 XT and has a core of 380 mhz and memory of 340 mhz. But its got 256bit and its an 8x1 pipeline. Take it the memory is slighty faster but the core is 120 mhz down.

Sub-£250, any GeForce is a bad choice.

Because its cheap. If a card is cheap under £60-80 then its going to be low spec compared to the top end cards and will just about run games a few months old let alone Halflife 2. If you really want to play Halflife 2 at any decent setting then you should be looking at a 9600 Pro at least if not a 9600 XT 256mb which can be had for just over £100. A 9800 Pro is only £150 and thats one of the best cards at the moment due to it being about half the price of a 9800 XT which only has a little extra performance, you could actually overclock a 9800 Pro to XT speeds.

ummm Dual CPU set up :P *Drool*... take it that was a server?

The way I do it is to rack up the pounds on ebuyer to form a quote, give the client the quoted price + £50.

If i get the go ahead, I then start hunting down the parts from alternative sources, such as Ebay (from good sellers I have business relations with). I then make whatever extra money and the client is none the wiser. Brilliant. As I already said, I charge £50-100, but it usually ends up at being £65/70 per PC.

I have made about 10 Barebones, but I still charge the same. I guess it would be a good idea to charge less.

The build cost would all depend on the sort of spec of system you are building, if it was a barebones system and you are just adding the otherbits to complete it then i would charge £35 but if it were a specific pc with some specialist parts that would take extra seting up and fitting the i would charge £50, the other thing to think about is warrenty, I would give 12 months hardware warrenty as that would be the maximum amount of time you will have on most componants to send it back to the supplier, i would not cover any software problems unless i charge for them and after the 12 months are over i would charge a call out rate as it is custom for most pc users who know nothing about computers to keep bugging you for stupid things which they will not do if you were to charge them.

The most i have charged someone for building a system unit was £100 with profit from the componants but that was a dual P4 rig with a SCSI Raid setup.
