tpaul is kwell.
Aye, Star Trek is about profit. I was tired when I typed that last night mind - I didn't do that intentionally.
I don't believe Roddenberry was interested purely in the profit though. He had a story to tell.
If he was, he would have probably tried to have got Andromeda (sp?) made sooner, but instead concentrated on his one series. Star Trek.

Prophets young man!
Freudian slip? After all, 'profits' is what ST is all about now. "How long can we flog this dead horse?"
Or, as they say in The Simpsons... "Star Trek 12 - So very, very tired."

You're thinking of "Emissary Part I & II" where Sisko meets the Profits for the first time in the wormhole and is trying to explain to them the linearity of time to which they don't understand (despite one of them living in a human shell for some time, as one of the episodes in the final season explains).
I Never got into DS9, as far as ranking goes;
TNG > Voyager > Enterprise > Tie between original and DS9
Sisko "Baseball."
Jake "Baseball baseball."
Quark "Baseball? Foolish humans, baseball baseball."
Or something to that extent.
The character relationships were excellent, the regular extras such as Morn allowing for humour, and the continuation of Michael Dorn's character, Worf, was a good idea to get TNG fans more interested as some considered things to be too slow for their liking. The last two seasons with the Dominion was were excellent too.
I consider The Next Generation the next best series. Watching them now, I see it focusing a lot on Data. It seems Data, the android, is showing the others what it is to be human, by not being human. He can't feel what the others feel, or see things from their perspective. And despite him being a superior being, he'd "gladly give it all to be human". The way he becomes as close to human as possible in Nemesis was a great round up to The Next Generation, which leads me to believe that the show wasn't primarily about the crew, but Data.
It is good that the show was still pretty much the same as it was with the first crew mind. The captain being the leader, a main female lead on the bridge (Troi), a 'logical' bridge officer (Data), a chief engineer (Geordie), and various other characters that make up the balance.
Voyager is my third favourite series. Introducing a female captain, a crew who just want to go home, and a chance to explore where the federation has no say whatsoever, with the exception of the Prime Directive and the Omega Particle (which must be destroyed as it is extremely dangerous - and considered perfection by the Borg.) Again, character relationship is very well put together, and the way the crew desperately bargain with new species and cope with their laws is rather well written. It allowed for the exploration that Deep Space Nine so almost reached with the Gamma Quadrant, but didn't due to the law enforcers over there...the Dominion. I felt the ending was rather rushed though.
I then consider Enterprise to be next. Although Gene Roddenberry's wife disproved of the show, I think Paramount (or the team behind Star Trek) have done very well in mixing our technology with that of the original series. However, I do have some problems with the show. The main being I seem to recall Spock being the inventor of the Tricorder and/or Hypospray, yet Enterprise, being set before Spock was supposed to have been born, has tricorders and hyposprays involved. Obviously, as technology now is rather more advanced than most of the original series' technology, there have had to be some changes to make it believable, but they have also changed the storyline a lot too. In "Encounter at Farpoint" (The Next Generation Season 1), Q simulates a mid 21st Century courtroom based after the third world war which was a nuclear war. The court room shows people to be rather primatively clothed and their behaviour rather barbaric, however that isn't how Enterprise shows things - even in civillian life.
However, despite all the limitations of 'future' series' I think they've done a great job.
Last but not least are the movies and orginal series. I can't say I watched the original series as much as I should, being a Star Trek fan. However, I have seen all the movies, which, with the exception of "The Voyage Home" and "Final Frontier" were all rather good. Especially The Wrath of Khan. I don't like the fact that Sa'avik (Sp?) in The Search for Spock was played by a totally different actress. She acts more like an Android than the Vulcan character of the previous movie.
The newer movies were great too - Generations being the introduction to the Next Generation crew into the movie world. The introduction to the Enterprise E was well done in First Contact and concluded the Borg storyline. Insurrection wasn't the best of the four, but was better than the two movies by the original crew I mentioned. And Nemesis was an excellent round up to the TNG crew, especially in the extra scenes which introduce Picard to new officers, especially his first officer, who gets rather fooled by Riker.
I hope they do atleast one Deep Space 9 movie, and possibly a movie with the Voyager crew, but I can see the next movie being a few more years down the line being based on the Enterprise crew.
I will now end this post with my head hung in shame over my vast Star Trek knowledge and passion for the show.

Cuh, you call yourself a fan?
It was just called Enterprise, but they've re-introduced the "Star Trek" bit from Series 3.
It was pretty pants, but now they have established an on-going story arc, it's a much better show. I suspect this is largely thanks to the introduction of Harlan Ellison to the crew - he was heavily involved in the masterpiece of TV sci-fi that was Babylon 5.

Agreed. Then TNG, then Voyager, and then classic
