The story of Jake’s Clan

It was another dawn of another day as Jake emerged from his home. Poking his head out of the door, he gazed at the surroundings and sniffed the morning air. It all seemed normal enough, so he carried on and walked out through the doorway of his home into the open air of the settlement. He didn't stop to close and lock door, being no door to lock. There was no need for one. Such was the nature of the clan’s settlement. Homes and shelters but no one really owned one, and all were open for all to sleep, rest or hide as they felt fit. Sure, it meant that they were always unsheltered for each other, but they had nothing to fear in that because although there were often fights and grudges, they were held openly where the winner won, the loser lost and nothing more was needed. You could always sleep easy.

Ofcourse, the homes being of this nature, no one had their own personal food supply. Instead there was one big supply of food that all had access too. It was mostly a huge supply of corn, presumably stored up by farmers who had owned it before the settlement had started, but there were various other foods that had been found and gathered to this one supply.
There was no trading, no economy, no rich, no poor, just this one food depot that everyone was free to help themselves to while everyone accepted responsibility for its upkeep. Naturally they consumed more food than they added, but this was accepted as the nature of the settlement, and when the food supply ran out, then they would move on, find another source of food and settle again.

Jake made his way to the food supply at a leisurely pace. There was no rush to eat and no harm in moving slowly. There were rarely intruders and even when there were, once they had been spotted the entire community stuck together to drive any aggressors or scavengers away. At the worst, one or two had been lost in some of the more vicious attacks, normally from the large ravaging beasts that sometimes found their way, but once the clan fought together, no foe had withstood their numbers and team tactics and had been driven off. Jake knew how to spot danger, and he knew how to deal with it if he did, so he was relaxed as he made his way to breakfast.

As it happened, he did see something unusual that day. It was a two legged giant. It was far away and barely moving but it was huge. It reminded Jake of a group of 3 giants he had seen before, but they were a bit smaller and seemed to move around a lot, ending up everywhere. They even came crashing in on the food supply which hadn’t gone down to well with Jake’s clan who had then attacked them. The screams and wails that came from them echoed throughout the entire settlement, but they then left and never returned.
This one was different though. It was bigger, moved very slowly and had something bright and yellow over its head. It seemed harmless, and far away, but Jake decided to let the others know, just incase it got too close for comfort.

Jake soon got to the food supply. It was a boxed encampment with four wooden walls. Doors had been carved into them by the clan but Jake preferred to climb the walls. Partly because it meant he could get straight to the food rather than having to climb through other clan members at the doorway, and besides it was good exercise and worked up a nice appetite. The doors all being made after the settlement, Jake reckoned that the farmers before must’ve accessed the supply the same way he did, and he liked to think he had a very strong sense of tradition.

Once over the walls, Jake jumped into the sea of corn and started his breakfast. After a bit to eat he found Jim and Trix, and told them about the giant. They in turn spread off to find everyone else, it was the way news was passed around in the clan. In the name of safety, it was decided that everyone should stay in the food supply together, while a couple of scouts kept an eye on the giant’s movements, which was fine by people. A day’s rest from scavenging was welcome, especially when such activities could be dangerous.

As the entire clan gathered into the food depot, they passed the time by eating, playing, wrestling and fighting. It was the clan’s way of keeping a community spirit and keeping in good fighting shape for when intruders tried to destroy their way of life. Some of the more senior fighters also gave lectures on the tactics of fighting giants, just incase they had to fight again. Two of the clan had been lost last time, squashed under the weight of one of the giant’s feet, but this time there was only one, and the clan were prepared.
Scouts returned periodically, giving word of the giant’s movements. It seemed to be moving around the entire settlement, examining everything. It was only a matter of time until it reached the food supply. The clan prepared themselves. Battle was a certainty so the younger and weaker hid while the fighters found positions on the walls, and in high places, ready to attack. They did not have to wait long.

The giant’s head emerged, towering over the four walls of the food depot and seemingly filling the entire sky. The clan were not intimidated though. Jake, in position, readied himself to go. The first attackers jumped onto the giant who jolted in surprise. Now was the time. Jake launched himself onto the giant, landed half way up its chest. He crawled his way up to the head and fought the only way he knew how, cling on and bite. The giant was now feeling the combined attacks of the clan and started screaming and shaking them off. Jake clung tight but the immense force of the shaking flung him off. He landed on his feet and moved quickly. Not a moment too soon either because behind him he felt the earth shake as the giant stamped on the ground, trying to squish the fallen clan, but he got none of them.
In the end it gave up and moved away, gradually shaking off its small assailants and disappeared from view. It was over. The battle had been won.

The entire clan (it’s pointless to say survivors because no one was lost) gathered in the food supply. There were slight casualties, Jim for example had been violently grabbed by the giant by the hand and thrown back down to the floor rather than shaken off, but at the worst they were shaken and bruised and would recover within a week.
Those that were worn after the battle rested while the rest returned to scavenging. Jake was among those who were tired and he rested in the depot, eating where he felt hungry and napping where he felt tired and soaking in the glory of the day. There were various reports about another giant, but this one seemed to stay well away from the settlement and disappeared shortly.

The day was not yet over though. Later on, scavengers started to bring back a new food. They seemed to be bright blue balls, like nothing anyone had seen before, but they gave off the most appetizing scent and had the sweetest taste. Once the scavengers had hoarded all they could find, the entire clan feasted on these new delights and celebrated the day.
Jake chewed his way through 3 of the blue delights. He was top of the world. The clan was victorious, the celebrations were exquisite and he had never eaten so well and so tastefully. His eyes started to feel heavy and Jake, full and happy, relaxed and closed them, loving the world and life, as he drifted into his eternal sleep.

Outside the old mill, the exterminator was talking to the engineer, who’s face was covered it sores, cuts and bruises.

"What a vicious lot! Must’ve been the same ones that attacked those kids a few months back."

"It wouldn’t surprise me. They seem to guard that pile of corn religiously. You should’ve seen how many were on it!"

"Yeah, the greedy buggers. They finished off the poison like I’ve never seen before. They should be pretty much dead in the morning. Then you can get back to work. Should be interesting this Mill museum thing you’re doing."

"Yeah. A nice straight forward job. It just needs repairing in places and cleaning up."

"Cleaning up, eh? What are you going to do with all those dead rats?"

"I could donate them to the school. My son’s always wanted to cut up dead animals in biology..."
