"this could get nasty...."

These days the console wars are hotter than ever getting mre hype and critiscm than ver before, but what happened to just gaming? Look at the xbox and gamecube, people are slagging them off even when they havent even been released yet and they are also getting too much hype which means it could get nasty.

The ps2 got alot of hype which didnt affect it too badly but it could get worse in the future to come, when next to every tv ad is for a console which puts people into a trance to go buy the game or console etc. At the moment there is the odd ad for the ps2 where a lady whispers' welcome to the third world' which is there motto and not too revealing about the console itself. But it could be worse when an xbox advert comes on with loud music and fast video clips and blurry colour saying get one now for the ultimate gaming experience, and even though you dont see it in action, kids will still beg there parents to get it.

In the good old days...(i wont say how old i am) there use to be one maybe 2 companies that made totally original and quality games that werent really rivaling all that match. The games were fun,addictive and very enjoyable with no hype or ad on tv or anything showing how good it is. Now the games in my opion arent as much fun to play, are too hyped and a wee bit expensive. The games are still good fun for a while but the older ones had more character and originality which built the gaming world to the current position it is in today.

Look at games like sonic and compare them to PD etc. sonic was fun, not too easy and the 2-player could play as tails in some titles. The games werent too easy but werent so pressured to finish a level like pd where the atmostsphere is so big you cant always enjoy the graohics.

back to the console wars hopefully you will choose the right consoloe for you and not a tv ad. Study the console off the web and read reviews etc. Nowadays too many younger gamers see an ad or fmv video clip and without really knowing much about the console they buy it too be slightly disappointed with it, finding it not in oyur taste range, eg. a kid buying a playstation from the tv ad for some cutesy games but he should have got the n64 and actually checked it out before getting hyped over it by yourself so you dont think of anything else

I guess it the Atari / Intellivision days you speak of ;-)

If anything I think games are more fun now. Back in the days of the Sega Master System and the NES you had to start from the beginning each time you played, and you'd only get any further by learning where all of the enemies are. Once you'd mastered the game, it could be completed in an hour or two.

These days, thanks to Memory Cards and the increased use of RAM in carts games have become more like adventures, that may take you over 24 hours to complete. If you're now finding gaming fun, then I suugest you're playing the wrong games.

I don't think that older games had more character at all. Take off those rose coloured glasses for just a mo, and take a proper look back. The lead characters in todays games are given something of a personality, and are much more interactive.

But here you're comparing two completely different genres. There were games on the Megadrive that had this same kind of pressure.

That's marketing for you. It's going to play an incredibly large part in just who gains the lions share of the market in the next generation.

The axes would obviously begin at the origin.

Tension would start off low, and as forces (quite what they are im not sure, ask Grix) increased, then tension would increase, exponentially i would imagine.

So in theory, tension would keep getting larger and larger and never converge on anything.

The origin, depending on where you started your axes.

Surely though, the tension would be on the dependant axis and the forces would be on the independant axis. So where would the graph converge to?

Depends where the forces were, and depends on how strong each force was.

Are you talking about a graph of tension? Which axis would the tension be one? The independant, or the dependant?

Of course, if the X-Box doesn't turn out to be as highly rated as I'm sure it will be, I'll go back to my DC and await the PS3 or the arrival of the new improved X-Box.

The correct saying would be the "tension converges", but it doesn't sound quite as good.
