Magic Monkey

“Operation B62” the old man didn’t so much as say the words as he exhaled them, a long exasperated sigh. “Yes, I remember it well” he leant back in his chair, his arthritic bones groaning slightly, “What do you want to know?”
The younger man sitting in the chair opposite the old man shifted forwards intently and in a low voice replied, “We know the mission details, the casualties” he paused “we just need to know more about the things”. The old man’s gaze was fixed upon the younger mans face, his brow furrowed. The old man cut in, “Do you mean Magic Monkey?” The room was filled with a long uncomfortable pause, the younger man gulped and rose to his feet, “Please, tell me everything you know” he asked in a polite tone as he settled in a seat next to the older man.

“Well” the old man began in a grainy old voice, worn out by time “we gained access to the base as planned and everything was going well when, when” the old man paused, looking down to the floor, remembering thoughts he had spent years trying to forget. “These machines” he started, “These huge iron giants with robotic claws and breaths of fire”. His eyes widened “Scimmia di magia, the Italians who made these beasts had dubbed them, Magic Monkey to you and I.” The young man shuffled slightly in his seat, hanging on the old man’s every word. “Please, continue” the young man asked calmly.

“We tried to stop them with guns but they just deflected our bullets, we knew they had advanced technology but this scared the sheer hell out of us! 9-foot tall metal killing machines with dull laser sensor eyes, solid steel claws with the purpose of crushing not scrap metal but flesh, a tail made of razor wire to act as a flail and one thing I will never forget” the old man’s voice faded. “What is that thing?” asked the younger man, his voice more excitable. “A logo, an emblem stuck onto this murderous machine like they were proud of what they had created, the image of planet Earth bound by a steel ring with the word ‘Globatronics’ engraved on it, the sick fools. They made a machine designed to kill, a robot capable of free murderous thought and the ability to kill the rest of my team.”

The old man cracked his knuckles nervously and fixed his eyes upon the young man, “They thought I was crazy when I told them this, the people at HQ, but you believe me don’t you?” The younger man rose to his feet once more and approached the older man who remained seated. “I think you have told me all I need to know, Mr Reece”, the old man’s eyes lit up and a smile spread across his weathered face. The old man rose to shake hands with his acquaintance but stopped dead in his stride. The younger man had drawn a small silver pistol capped with a silencer from his belt and was pointing it at the old man’s chest. “Sorry Mr Reece, but I am afraid you know too much” he said before squeezing the trigger one, twice, thrice and sending the old man tumbling backwards into a bloodied heap in his chair, his eyes wide open and white and his jaw dropped leaving his mouth half-open.

The younger man quickly exited the old man’s flat and returned to the street below. He climbed into a non-descript black truck and took a clipboard from a neatly organised leather bound briefcase. The paper clipped to the board held a list of names, half of which were crossed out and half of which remained unscathed. The younger man took an expensive looking fountain pen from his jacket pocket and drew a neat line through the name ‘Mr Reece’. He placed the clipboard back into the briefcase and the pen back into his pocket before starting up the truck and rolling away from the building. The only evidence of his visit was the business card which remained in the old man’s pocket.

it reminds me of some alien movie. I can't put my finger on it. Experimental monkeys, go ape and stuff. Hmm, can't figure it out. Was this story inspired by the movie Outbreak but taken to the extreme?

I liked it a lot, I think the fact that the younger man didn't have a name, until the end, added more mystery to the story and his character, excellent.
