Hi guys i come to you for help and advise.

Ok, firstly I am in year 13 and have 8 wks left of school.

I havent applied for university as I was going to work.

Now, I feel differently due to bizarre and sudden changes in my life and so now I am looking at courses.

I have a dilemna. I can wait find a course and go next septembre or I can go this septembre if I hurry up and fill in UCAS in that new speed application.

I have looked at a journalism course at Middlesex. - But this is confusingly paired with Harlow college and to take a degree I would have to travel two and fro with zero money as a student therefore this isnt a great course for me.

But then low and behold - Kingston. Kingston is not too far from home - or where my partner will be studying. It offers a great arrangement of courses which are the following:

Creative writing joint with journalism:

Creative writing joint with drama:

English Lit joint with drama:

English Lit joint with creative writing:

So, I am scared. I have spokent o some people who have said that creative writing is great, others that as a degree it isnt a core subject at all it is a section - whether this would be recognisable to employers or journalists is what I need to know!

Also, I have heard that to be a Journalist alot do not want to see a degree in there area but something else (so you go in the field with an expertise)

I know for a fact that they are interested in me and there are spaces for me in the creative writing course.

I am confused, accomodation pointers? UNi courses? Student life? Is it worth it?

Employement opportunities for writers/ journalists and work in media?

Please O please help a girl trying to plan her life.

Love ginge xxx

Yeah it's easy to get to London from there plus drinking there in the summer is COOL, the pubs down the river are all student bars with a great atmosphere. Let me know if you need me to show you around, I'll come and meet you. Clubbing is good too.

Well, it depends how close you want to live to the uni, it takes me about half an hour/45 to get to Kingston and it's cheap where I live, so you can find cheap accommodation locally, but with like 4/5 of you in a house it will be fine, plus there's loads of places to work in Kingston part time.

Have you compared that course with other unis that offer it?

You'll love it, I'm really excited now about me going to uni, I wanna go now. 4 years that will undoubtedly be the BEST years of my life!

You'll have plenty of free time as long as you're not taking Computer Science.

go to some where with a good social scene, know people who have been to uni's such as keele and say, that whilst the people are cool and the unis's good it is in the middle of nowhere so it makes the social scene a bit poor.

Uni is the best years of your life if you want it to be (followed by your worst 40!) no responsibility really, lots of free time and a lot of banter.

My friend is at Kingstone and she loves it, she wants me to go but i'm staying in Kent to study.

He accomodation sounds good too, it's basically 8 people in a flat with a kitchen and on suite bathroom!

Thanks Kat, you have been helpful.

I am researching alot into this one as i have a good feeling. I am seeing it with my dad on the 14th of April hopefully, A friend went there saturday and did mention that the actual location is marvellous. It helps for us thesbians being so close to the city.

Accomodation looks ok - just after the first yr it will prove bitterly expensive.

I have looked further into the courses like you said and did find a better option than the usual journalism joint hons.

I would like to persue a joint BA hons in Drama and Creative writing.

Hmmm... I will be back for help and cuddles

Kingston's just around the corner from me, it's alright for drinking but I've never heard anyone talk about the uni so I don't know what it's reputation is like.

Definitely go otherwise you'll regret it, but don't fill out your ucas til right at the last minute - you have up until June 15th and even then you can still go through clearing, that way you can really make sure you're making the right decision. I decided to go in January, and like you I was confused and didn't want to rush, so I did a LOT of research, and I bought the Guardian & the Times university guides, which helped a lot, I strongly advise you to go to your library to read those. This is such a big decision you want to make sure you pick the right uni. You could always take a year out to travel or work and save some money and then go next year once you're 100% sure? I haven't sent my UCAS off yet, cos I'm still finalising everything, but it's taken me 3 months to kind of be sure that what I'm applying for is right.

Are you wanting to stay local? You should look on the websites of a few uni's you're interested in and look at ALL courses they do, as you might find something else appeals to you more. Like they do a course 'the science of football' you wouldn't even think they do stuff like that would you.

Also I'm always a bit wary about unis that are desperate for you to go there. I can basically get into a couple of unis directly onto a degree, but the good unis require me to do their foundation course first as I'm a mature student.

Have you been to www.ucas.ac.uk? If you go there and search by course, you can see what your options are.

Good luck, and let me know if you need any help

Yes, that sounds like pretty good work experience at the aquarium, even if it does sound a bit fishy (sorry, couldn't resist!).

Doesn't really matter where you work though, it all stands you in good stead for the future. If you want to write it is especially important to meet different people and experience new things, and if you know you won't be staying in a job for too long it's a great chance to try something you're not sure about and wouldn't normally think of doing, hence my suggestion of working abroad for a month or so, but even here you can find some really interesting jobs to tell everyone about.
