Internet Dating
Just a little something I wrote...

In solitary silence I sit, keyboard clicking
The hum of my monitor a background melody
Her name is Lesley-Anne, she says
We met last week in Teen chat 3

I ask her, “What’s you’re A/S/L ?”
She’s 15/Female/U.K.
She likes R&B and punk music
And we agree Busted are gay

I told her “I’m 15/M/UK”
She doesn’t know I’m thirty-two
After waiting months she finally said
“I hope some day that I will meet you”

We arranged a cinema date
for the following weekend
I’d meet her at the multiplex
On the road by McDonalds – right at the end

I waited, lonely, at the corner as agreed
Clean-shaved, in a shirt, dressed-up
A bouquet of flowers in my fist
Would she care that I am grown up?

And then I felt a steady hand
It tapped me on the shoulder
“Hi, I’m Keith from teen chat” he said
“You’re Mike? - You look much older!”

My cover blown and dreams scattered
My hopes dragged through the gutter
“I wanted a 15 year old girl” I weep
“Not a thirty-something woodcutter”

Some of the rhymes there were so strained. Drop the rhyme scheme, that's my advice.

It's humour first, poetry second.

And without the rhyme it is just lone lines. I was going to write a story but thought "nah" - maybe I should have done.

But sometimes adding the rhyme spoils the scan, so it doesn't flow as well. Especially when you're reading it rather than hearing it.

Read it out loud, thats what I did, the rhytmn is a 7 or 8 bar one, but it isn't strictly solid.

I admit, it doesn't scan nicely.

Hmmm.
