And so, we [Man United] are out of the Champions' League dissapointingly early-on, as our season takes the next big-step towards falling into a complete and utter shambles (in the words of England right-back Gary Neville). Ending the season with absolutely nothing; throwing-away valuable points in easy games; letting those Gooners run-away with it all, in full-control... We're beginning to sound a lot like the old Chelsea of seasons gone-by!
It may well be all-over. We do now appear to have very-little left to play for, with Arsenal on such an incredible season-long run of form - what are the chances they could throw-it-all-away, again, this season?!
Why can't we just end the season now, as it is, since it's all pretty-much just how it's going to be in May, anyway? I mean, the league belongs to Arsenal - that, nobody can deny, right now. We're up against them in another FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park - only, this time, there's no David Beckham, no defence and only half a Roy Keane to save us. Plus, they now have Thierry Henry! Up against any of the three Football League teams still in it, you have to favour the team-at-the-top with that 9-point lead.
"Why do we bother going on??" "What is the point??"
That may be what's on the minds on the minds of many other people with an affection for Manchester United, after recent events - but that doesn't apply to Gary Neville; seemingly, the one-man in our team who never seems to think (or "want to believe") our season really is finished.
For a player who's made the No.2 jersey his own at Old Trafford for some-years now; a player still regarded today as the first-choice England right-back. A hard-working Manchester-born United man who deserves so-much-more than he recieves of the right kind of attention. Whenever we read about Gray Neville in the 'papers, it's never of any good news, for him. Everything publicised about him is created to make him look bad. For all the effort he puts in; all he does for the other 10-men and his manager, on the pitch; he never gets the rewards he truly deserves.
Now, you can say what you like about Emile Heskey, Danny Mills, young Wayne Rooney and any other 'Regulars' we see undeservedly in the England teams, but I do not see how you can be so-quick to bad-mouth a player so-deserving of every-single Cap he has earnt, in favour of a younger, cooler player who can score goals or something.
Of course, he has made some big mistakes in his time, at all first-team levels (and, some pretty big-ones for England, too!). But then, so does every player. And, whenever Glenn Johnson [or whoever your first-choice No.2 may be...] makes a mistake, are you again so-sharp as to critisize his game? No. Is it really "just because he's playing for United"? If anything, that's one-heck of a complement for him - especailly since he's still there after all these years; one of the home-grown prodigies who has not been, simply, washed-away by some fancy, young foreign import (even though, we seem to be linked with a new new full-back every 10-days or-so!). Gary Neville really deserves everything he has seen and won with United - and more.
Any talk of how "Beckham was only making him look good" is a load of ball' - and you know it. If anything, Neville helped Beckham. He gave the rising England star all the protection and support he needed so that our old No.7 focus, concentrate and deliver into the box for those all-important goals that have seen United ontop of the league for umpteen years since the Premiership first began.
Neville exceeded in areas where Beckham could not and their close friendship really helped the whole partenership come together, over the years.
But, David Beckham is now long-gone - and one-valued thing-of-our-past, infact. However, Gary Neville is still the same player he ever was. No matter he plays behind now, he still has the same job to do as he ever did. Whether he plays at right-back, or, even, as a centre-back (where we need someone most!), he never stops working until that third 'peep' on the final-whistle.
He may often be over-opinionated at times, but, isn't that how any die-hard player with a real love for his club would be? Just look at Alan Smith's never-ending hopes of saving Leeds United. Or, look at the way in which Paulo Di Canio's love for West Ham often proved crucial to them, on the pitch (even if, not quite enough, last season). You can have however-many-millions-of-pounds-worth of talent all over the pitch, but, no matter `whoŽ they are, they aren't the ones who'll really win the games for you. Within every team, along with a strong goalkeeper and somebody upfront to score the goals, you also need to have that fighting-spirit that really wants it all.
However, in a day where money makes the game go around, and the media seem able to penetrate any brick walls, picking at any minute details, hard-work really goes un-rewarded, today. Therefore, even if it all pays-off in the end, Alan Smith's never-say-die attitude will only really be applauded by the ever-grateful Leeds fans who have to cancel any plans of a search for a new team they can call 'their own'. Gary Neville's efforts to help United out of this nightmare of a season will also go without its rewards, also, I am sure.
If, realisticaly, we [England] are to stand even the slightest ounce of a chance of going all-the-way in Portugal this summer, we are going to need players like Gary Neville in our starting-eleven, whether you like it or not!

However, he isn't our PFA Representative because no-one else wanted the responsibility - he's one of the front-runners (along with Ryan Giggs) in Sir Alex Ferguson's eye for the sacred Captain's armband when the time comes for Roy Keane to hang-up his boots.
