Well its scarily reached that time when I have to actually make some kind of decision about my future, and we've had to fill out a form as to our entrance to 6th form and A-level choices. I talk about it all with my parents teachers etc. and I came up with a list of 4 and put those down as my initial choices. Here are my four:

Maths
Geography
Music
Politics

I just wanted to know if anyone was doing or had done these courses and had any comments/recommendations/slagging off that would perhaps be of use to me....

Thanking you

I take Politics, French, German and English Language..Maybe I'm just really boring, but I actually enjoy Politics more than any of the others.

There are a lot of essay questions, yes - the exam itself is a 1 hour essay for each module, so you do need to be certain you know exactly what you want to say in the event of various quesitons popping up...

the lessons themselves are really good for me, but I think it will depend on who your teacher is and who else is in your group. We deviate every lesson and go off on ranodm debates about one thing or another, which work nicely having experienced, open minded teachers and a good mix of political opinion amongst the students. Very little learning of individual dates, facts, figures and so on - just a couple for particular case studies, and you'll pick a lot of the rest up just by hearing them a few times.

Good choice, in my opinion - geography's apparently great fun, but no idea on the other 2, sorry.

I quite like `Fire´ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (...yes, the Jimmy Hendrix song!).

**Never mind - wrong thread! Sorry. :S**

(I did wonder what this had to do with A-Levels...)

Well at the mo' i am doing, Maths, Further Maths, Computing, and Physics. Perhaps the hardest selection of subjects that you could choose, and i was warned about this, but i came out of my first lot of exams with straight A's. Now for my advice. Computing is my favourite subject, with all the programming etc. and i didnt have an IT GCSE or anything. Physics, wasn't my favourite GCSE course, but it was either this or Chemistry, so i chose Physics. The course so far is very good, expanding on the ideas met at GCSE and it involves a lot of Math and practical, which is really which i chose it as you'll find out. Now onto maths, this subject was forced onto me after getting full marks on my GCSE paper, and breezing thro' all the gcse topics. I really love Maths, it always brings up new ideas etc, and since i find the majority of it easy, i like it. Plus my class is only four people, so we can go off topic and discuss whatever we want.

Now the reason that I like these subjects may be cus of the good teachers, or the quality of the Centre, or even cus I am a straight A's student, but do not be put off if you are getting B's etc. My mate got that for the majority of his GCSE's, but came out of his First module with straight B's, improving on the prediction of straight D's. So if you have any subjects which you particularly like, go for them and i can guarantee that you will like them, and do well in them. But if i were picking my subjects again, i would have chosen one of the easier subjects like Psychology or Sociology, if not for the time off, then the girls :P. Anyway good luck.

For my levels I have selected...

English Lit
Media
History
Politics

I've chosen these because a) I'm goood at english and history b) I want to try new subjects and c) I want a career that involves writing in some way and thought these would be useful.

But History and Politics are very similar, but im not sure what else I could do.

Any tips/suggestions?

Cheers

Politics is really bloody boring for me, but that might be the teacher. You study the nitty gritty things - the constitution, just what powers the PM has, the most effective ways pressure groups function...

You have to get good at writing consise essays - each module paper is only 1 hour long.

Well, I got an A* in my GCSE a year early for maths. I then did a Pure Maths paper and got it back today. I got a C, I was expected an A. I can't remember making any mistakes. I dunno, maybe it wasn't my day.

Hmm I'm not sure. I'm currently quite interested in being an architecht or a civil engineer, so mechanics might be a good idea.

And lets face it, physics has always been maths, just disguised maths.

I'm into my first year of a maths A level course (consisting of only pure and mechanics, not stats). Did a pure 'specimen' paper over half term, got a high D, but apparently people on average at my 6th form go up by two grades in the summer so that's sounding good to me. I got a B at GCSE, but that was from two years of spending maths lessons memorising pi to ridiculous accuracy (don't ask), so had I been doing what I was supposed to I would probably have been able to get an A or maybe even an A*, who knows? I found the first few weeks of the pure course very tough but I seemed to get the hang of it after that and am doing OK now. Aslong as you're willing to put in some work to help your understanding of these things and you're doing OK at GCSE then you shouldn't find it too difficult. In theory anyway...

Mechanics on the other hand is a right b****, it's like GCSE physics but toned up muchly. Too muchly. Right now we're doing moments, which is all well and good until you through in angles and various other wierd ideas, then you end up with total confusion and not much else.
Though I had the option of doing pure and mechanics or pure and stats, since I'm doing physics too I took mechanics. As you're not doing physics then the chances are mechanics wouldn't be of much use to you

Actually I was warned back at my enrolment thingy we did that the AS level maths was a massive step up from GCSE which scared me a bit but it's not that bad. I wish they'd warned me about physics though..

I don't do any of the others but from what my friend says Geography involves lots of coursework, and I for one really really hate coursework and apparently politics is boring but I don't know any more details.
