Salo returns with a win while incidents abound

Mika Salo has won the Australian Grand Prix with a flawless drive but whether he would have won it from the early running, we shall never know. Salo returns to the F1 Championship after driving for Toyota in 2002 but not getting a drive in 2003.

The early running was all Raikkonen and De La Rosa. Raikkonen got the jump on De La Rosa off the start and seemed comfortable. A slight mistake from Raikkonen saw De La Rosa get right on his gearbox and then disaster struck. What can only be described as a reckless overtaking move saw De La Rosa contact Raikkonen on lap 16 and pitched them both into the gravel. Raikkonen recovered first but the damage was done as he was now near the back. De La Rosa also made it back on but at the back of the field.

Pantano made the first mistake of the season when he ran wide and lost a couple of places. Heidfeld ran off on the high speed corners and it distracted Baumgartner and he spun. Both lost places. Frentzen looked rattled while trying to fend off a string of cars behind him. Button had made his pit stop and was behind Firman, he tried to overtake and got it totally wrong and lost places.

The drama wasn't over as Pantano and Coulthard tangled taking them both off the track. Both recovered to the track. With the race looking seemingly secure, focus switched to the final points places. Heidfeld and Villeneuve were running really close with Villeneuve trying to hold on to 7th place. Heidfeld muscled past and Villeneuve ran wide. That dropped Villeneuve into the lead of a pack of about 7 cars. Villeneuve tried to protect his 8th place and 1 vital point, but Montoya had other plans. A foolish move resulted in Montoya dispatching Villeneuve off the track. Montoya came off worse as he dropped to the back but Villeneuve lost a couple of places. This meant that the new teammates, Michael Schumacher and Villeneuve, were running right next to each other. Schumacher showed no respect and punted Villeneuve off too.

There were 3 retirements in the race. Rookie Bruni only had 10 laps of his first Grand Prix before his transmission failed. He was looking solid in the points at the time. Verstappen also looked like picking up a good points haul but that ended on lap 25 with an engine problem. Fisichella was knocking on the podium door when his right rear suspension failed. It might have happened due to some contact a few laps before.

So, Salo returns to F1 with his second career win after the front 2 taking each other out and getting the jump on Sato out of the pits. Poor pit work meant that Sato had to work his way past Ralf Schumacher, which he did and got 2nd place, also on his return to F1. Ralf Schumacher takes a podium place in 3rd. Panis looked fast but the leading 3 were just too quick so 4th was a good result. Button survived a scare and kept his grid placing of 5th, although it could have been more. Barrichello is enjoying life at his new team with 6th place. Heidfeld takes 7th and Baumgartner kicks off his F1 career with 8th and 1 point.

1st Der Nazi 11pts (Winner of Round 1)
2nd Mike Swade 10pts
3rd Virtuoso 7pts (If you had stated the driver for most positions gained, you would have got the full 8pts, meaning you would have won, as you were the closest to the tie breaker. All you gave me was the team so I could only give you half the points.)

I look forward to seeing all of you for Round 2!

You won one race. There's no need to be cocky; you never know, you could well finish last in Malaysia.

Bloody Badgerman cost me the race! :-[

The real reason I didn't win was because I had to watch out for that speed camera on the straight. Bloody 30mph speed limit.

The Edit Post feature came in handy here. Your wish is my command. Senna GP is now officially MG F1. I've updated it on the website on the one page so far but I will change it all later.
