I'm gutted.

For years I've loved music. Rhythms, melodies, beats, lyrics - everything. As of a couple of years ago, I started to play the keyboard and piano. By now, I'm rather good indeed, if I do say so.
I'd dare say I've got a musical talent. And it takes a lot for me to say that - I'm extremely in 'real life', if you like.
It has been great, playing these instruments.

And then, the drums.
Aahhhh, the beautiful creation that is the drumkit...

Started playing about a year and a bit ago. Up until about, what. Maybe about 4/5 months ago, I wasn't, shall we say, all that great. I could keep a rhythm together, albeit a fairly simple one. But suddenly, the concept of it, the knack - it just seemed to click with me. And again, I dare say I'm quite good. Nowhere near as good as I am at the keyboard and piano, of course.
But I'm alright.

Now, what's the point of this?
Well.

I began to learn these instruments at school. And as soon as I had, I bought a keyboard. I had to. And that was that. They make, if you wish, a relatively low amount of noise. Even if the quietest is too loud, you've got your headphones.

But here's the thing.
The drums. I love the drumkit far far more than I ever could love playing the keyboard or piano.

The anticipation for the chance to go to the music department, saunter off into the 'band room' as it's known, and just let the kit absorb me is unbearable.

I want a drumkit.
I really, really do.
But I can't. There's no room for a start. We could make room. We could convert the loft. But that'd cost loads. Then there's the small matter of the noise.

Oh, the beautiful noise. To me, at least.
Ignorant neighbours. "Ooh, no. What a racket".

It's what they'd think. And I'm such a nice guy that I respect this. I understand this. But I just wish I could have a drumkit. I honestly do. I love the damned thing. It's just one of those things I suppose.

I could get brushes rather than nylon tipped sticks. But to be honest, it just isn't as satisfying. And why splash out on a drumkit if you can't play it to its full potential?

Urgh. I'm seriously annoyed. There's nothing I can do. It's be far too loud to play at all, let alone frequently. It'd annoy my neighbours. My parents. Everyone around us. Guh.

There.

It depends how excessive/loud it is. The first step would be a complaint to the Council about Noise Nuisance. If you persist after the Council's contact, things would be taken further (providing another complaint was made).

I swear theres some law that only allows you to be prosecuted if your making noise after 11pm.

Actually you can be served with a noise abatement order from the courts and can be prosecuted.
Best thing to do is to discuss with your neighbours. I agreed with them that I would only play Saturday & Sundays between 12-4pm, and if they were having some kind of occasion then if they let me know, I would not practice.

Buy practice pads.
Rubber discs that fit over the heads, you can whap them as hard as possible and it'll make a dull "thwap" you'll barely be able to hear from the next room. And you can also get cheap rubber practice cymbals.

Why not just get some sound-proofing for the walls. I'm sure theres some sort of cladding that you can buy. I've seen it at my school.

I wouldn't mind actually.
Their daughter ain't half bad, I'm telling you.

And yeah, I'll consider it. A conversion'll cost absolutely loads though.
It'd be worth it though.

If you want to play the drums so bad I suggest you go talk to your parents about it. If you explain you want to express your musical talent i'm sure they'll give in eventually. Get them to convert the loft into something useful, aswell as your drumkit, e.g a computer room/office.

My brother wanted a drum kit a few years back, my parents let him and he played constantly a few years back. No-one minded, it's loud yes, but surely watching the TV or listening to music gives the same effect?

And neighbours? F**k them, (not literally), if they want to complain they can, theres nothing they can do about it other then moan.
