With these considerations -
*Xbox live - it runs fine on it
*Not extortionate
*Main use 5-10pm, but certainly daytime as well at points...

Haven't a clue.

Why cant broadband be as cheap as narrowband then I wont have to be anticipating the lag whilest snipind on a ridge in delta force.

What does the Xbox live like?
Quite comfortably, I'd imagine.
Though I suppose sitting on a desk all day isn't much fun.
Highlights of the day'd be getting controllers thrown at you, and getting kicked and so forth.

I think you're a little confused.
56k (a 'standard' connection, using a 56k modem. Most likely what you'll be on) is considered "narrowband", ie, low bandwidth. Which makes sense.
It's generally slow.
Whereas Broadband is.... broadband.
It's supermega fast, and uses optical fibre technology to send signals up to 40/50 odd times faster than 56k.
It's a lot more expensive though, and that includes the hardware needed and so forth.
