Chelsea confirm Robben signing

Tuesday, Mar 02, 2004

Chelsea have won the race to sign top Dutch star Arjen Robben.

The PSV Eindhoven player will arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer in transfer deal worth £12m, following today's agreement between the clubs.

The 20 year old has played both as a left-winger and as a second striker for PSV and Holland.

His impressive scoring record speaks for itself. He has won four caps and scored two goals since his debut for the national team in April last year.

In 21 appearances this season for PSV, he has found the net seven times, and in his first full season in 2002/03 following his move from FC Groningen his goal tally was 12.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon said: "This is a great signing for Chelsea. Arjen is a top quality player who will become a major asset for our club in the years ahead. For his age, he shows great maturity and mental strength to go with his natural footballing skills.

"It's an excellent example of how Chelsea is appealing to the new wave of European talent and our commitment to bring the best young players to Stamford Bridge as well cultivate the best, young English talent."

Head coach Claudio Ranieri added: "For me, Arjen Robben will be a fantastic addition to our squad. He is quick, strong, scores goals, makes goals. He can do everything. His style is perfect for the Premier League and I am very happy that he wanted to come to us."

I think Ranieri might try him wide right, and then have him and Duff switching wings ever so often.

Would someone kindly remove the stick from Badgerman's anus?

Thank you kindly.

So, how is this player going to fit in? Where does he fit? He can't expect regular games up front because he will surely be behind Mutu, Crespo, Hasselbaink and maybe Gudjohnsen. That means he might get the odd game on the left but doesn't Duff play on the left?

Chelsea paid too much for him in my opinion, double his valuation - However it's not like Chelsea can't afford it.

At this rate, I can't see how Chelsea are going to keep everyone happy.

Yet again, Chelski sign some foreign kid for a large chunk of money. Such a regular occurance that I'm starting to get bored. He should do well, though, seeing his obvious talent, and the fact he has the chance to develop among some damn good players.

Is there really any point in 'Chelski' signing him? He would of been better off going to Man United...
