X850XT PE can be found for £200 quite easily...

And I heard the GT performed, on the whole, better than the Ultra?

The best you can get would be either the X850XT PE or the 6800 Ultra, neither of which would leave you much change from £380.

Nearly all graphics cards upward of £60 will support DirectX 9.0c...

But as for quality, well here are my four suggestions... (All AGP unless mentioned)

Budget: ATi Radeon 9600XT (£76) . Can be picked up around £75 these days (I paid £100 for it - but it came with HL2 so whatever) and is very good. Probably last you for a year or so, but by that time SLi will have taken hold.

Mid: ATi Radeon 9800 Pro (£90+) or nVidia 6600GT (£110+). Should last a bit longer, but not actually that much better than the 9600XT...

Top: (Both of these are PCI-E) ATi Radeon X850XT PE (£275+) or nVidia 6800GT (£200+). Now, the nVidia is the best bet, not just because it's the cheaper (but I'd go for one around £240 with all the frills - TV-in an' all that) but also because it has forward compatibility due to SLi - where 2 Graphics cards are compined to give more power (not quite double though) - whereas ATi have yet to reveal their dual GPU offering.

I'm currently running a 9600XT, due to a "cashflow problem" (Warcraft makes me work bad)...
