The first generation included the spectrum, Amiga, Nintendo entertainment system, Sega master system and many more. It featured the first Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda games and these classics are currently being re-released on the Gameboy Colour. The Gameboy made an appearence and the Nintendo Virtual boy flopped.
The second generation had less participants but still a great generation. Nintendo and Sega were going at each other like cat and dog with the Mega drive and the SNES leading the industry. Nintendo showed us what they could do with Super Mario world and Rare showed us what they can do with Killer instinct and Donkey Kong. Whilst Sega and Sonic caught the hearts of many a six year old and the release of the excellent Gamegear which sadly failed due to short battery life showed us that the Gameboy pocket may soon be under threat
The third generation is the 3D generation. Sega was ready but its system the Saturn inevitably failed but they weren't the only ones the Phillips CDI also died despite support from Nintendo. Sony were to replace Sega and successfuly too but Nintendo soon appeared in 1997 and despite a rocky start Pokemon and the successful Gameboy colour kept them afloat and the N64 soon prospered. Goldeneye, Metal gear solid, Zelda and Tomb raider all showed up in this generation which is the one which is about to dissapear.
The fourth generation has just begun with the PS2 and Dreamcast which sadly failed. Nintendo with their Gameboy
Advanced and Gamecube promises to shock the industry and with the news that the American giants Microsoft and their X-box is entering industry makes the fourth generation a vey promising generation indeed.
So what was or will be your favourite generation?
Here's to the future
