Judging by your special observe pic, Borat, you won't need to carry a gun to kill.

Hmmm, yes there are several jobs I am interested in, namely one consisting of monitoring communications, which is essentially an intelligence gathering job. This will no doubt involve completing a foreign languages course. I say that as a friend joined up about 2 years ago doing pretty much the same job, and he has been doing extensive studies of arab languages such as farse(sp).

The other is working about radar planes (I forget the name, is it Nimrod?) scanning the seas for submarines and maritime vessels. This appeals to me much more, as I really want to do something 'hands on', I want to get out and see some of the world, and this would surely be more likely to allow me to do it.

Both are related to my degree, and so offer me an opportunity to advance me studies while working in a fairly well paying job.

The issue of killing someone is not something I had given much thought. I have a strange aspiration to know how I would fare in combat, and have had this ever since I can remember. It is probably something you cannot judge until you are faced with the situation, but if you are trained sufficiently and have clearly defined objectives, that being the safety of your colleagues and friends, then I would imagine it tends to focus the mind somewhat. No one wants to kill, but you have to accept that you may have to if you plan to apply for such a job. I am willing to accept that possibility.

As for the being away from friends and family, it's similar to many other jobs. But most other jobs don't have you sign 12 year contracts (varies depending on position) or vow to risk your life.

Here's a thought for you: could you handle knowing you had killed someone?

It's a hard question. But also one that could be valid. Some people get eaten up by it, breakdown and realise that they just aren't up for it, especially if those who had died were women and children. It could happen.

You mentioned being interested in communications side of things. I have no idea what sort of jobs are available in it at the moment. But hey, I imagine there is some. The Bowman radio systems project is now something like 7 years late and several hundred million over budget.

Possibly you would like GCHQ. It's monitoring communtications that they do. Just a thought. And I imagine they will be expanding as well if MI5 are doubling in size.

Good Night Lindgren, take it easy!

Speaking of flying .....

I've been giving some more serious thought to applying for the RAF. I'll have made a decision by late this year. It just seems like something I really want to do. I am very interested in the whole telecommunications side, in particular being part of an aircrew utilising such technology.

My only hang up about it is living so far away from all my family and friends, but I suppose you do get used to that. If it wasn't for that I'd already have made my mind up. It just needs more consideration, but I do believe at this point that it would be one of the best decisions of my life.

Any thoughts?
