Amazing isn't it. The way inflation has no effect whatsoever on the games industry. Games are at the lowest prices they have ever been, well, in a long time and games consoles just get cheaper and cheaper! Games no longer cost £40 and £50, althought the PS2 titles started off at £45, but they quickly settled to £40 and online stores sell PS2 games at around £35.

Anyway, I was just looking back at my collection of SR magazines, and to my surprise, the 1997 Feb/March featured the new launch of the N64. I actually thought it was released earlier than that... Never mind. But at £249.99 it seems rather expensive really, but then that's four years ago.

N64 games were around £50!

I couldn't believe that the Mega Drive was still being sold - £94.99 with 6 games??? Just think - this was in it's last days of life, and at such a price - a Dreamcast is comparable to that!
Amazing!!!

PlayStations were cheaper than Sega Saturns, at a whopping £186.99, the SNES still had some support - but iit was clear that the Sony machine was to be the winner of that war. With double the amount of Saturn games, everyone at this time wanted the PlayStation, everyone apart from me apparently.

PCs were incredibly slow! At £1999 the best PC was a 200mhz! But at this time I don't think the PC's were rated according to the mhz count. The SR mag had the same 'ram' advertsing, and the good old £3 discounts were there too!

I think I must have been playing games like Dark Savior, Sega Rally and Fifa 96 at the time on the Sega Saturn, and I guess I were too blind eyed to spot that the PlayStation would be the market leader, and that Sega Saturn games would no longer be available in a couple of years. I'm glad I was ignorant of Sony's romping franchise - I may never have gotten a Dreamcast otherewise!

I just found this quite interesting really - I mean at this time, who could have predicted that the N64 would be outsold heavily by the PS, and who would have cared that PCs would be 7 times the speed!

Oh well, the memories...

I was looking through an old catalouge the other day - GAME Winter '97. Some of the N64 prices in there were crazy, Doom 64, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, were all £55, Wave Race, Lamborgini 64, Clayfighters 63 1/3 were £60 and the most outrageous of them were ISS Pro, Killer Instinct (?) and Shadows of the Empire - £65!!!
