Right, with the amount of tech-heads in this forum I know one of you will be able to solve my dilema.

- I cannot perform actions in my hotmail inbox, which I beleive is caused by a java error

- I cannot download java plugin because my computer cannot find the signature for the java programme, or any other programmes (ie Macromedia shockwave) when I try to download them, even if I click "ok" to download them.

I have fiddled with security settings and everything but, in all honesty, I haven't got a bloody clue what is going on. I'm not too great with computers, or at least the technical stuff, and I really need a hand before stress consumes me.

Thanks in advance.

This really could stem from a number of things. Have you disabled any background applications? If you go to Start > Run and type "services.msc" you will see a list of functions enabled/disabled for your setup. When I went through to tweak XP I started off by only leaving two of those applications enabled, incidently the only two required to see my desktop. After that I slowly added processes with the help of a guide. My point is that when I had certain processes disabled I couldn't perform vital tasks. One wouldn't let me install anything due to the XP digital certificate being disabled where as others took away my active broadband connection so that I couldn't connect to the net.

In there you will find a list of all processes and if you double click on the process name you will be able to see a little bit of information about what it does. Got to:

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

There is a really good guide on that page which will help you sort your configuration out. It could be something that has been disabled by a virus or piece of spyware in the past.

Failing that try going into your add/remove programs application within control pannel and then click on windows components. Make sure that you go through and check that most of the networking and media programs are currently installed. Try unticking > rebooting and then going through installing them all again. It has to be one of those two by the sounds of it.

Give it a bash.
