I currently have an ATi Radeon 9500pro and looking to upgrade to something with a bit more "oompf". Not interested in the 9800XT or FX5950(?) as these are prohibatively expensive.

Any suggestions? Was looking at the 9800pro or 5700 Ultra?

Hum where did you read that? Reference boards more often that not have very inadequate cooling.

The official ATI version of the 9800 XT is the most stable and the best of the lot.

I never advise people to wait, because you spend your whole life waiting for the next graphics card and ultimately miss out on a lot of fun while you're stuck with your current one.

Alan my best advice to you would be to buy the most expensive piece of silicon with ATI written on that you can find. Powercolor and Connect3D make the best ATI cards.

Floggint the old one to partially fund the new. 9500pro's are still quite desirable especially as they were the first ATi's to support DX9.

A 9800XT is under £300 now and thats for a Hercules one as well. Personnally Tyla I would wait just a little longer until the R420 comes out as the 9800 Pro/XT should fall a bit in price. Be careful not to wait too long as otherwise the cards will be hard to find.

I have a 9800 Pro so I think I will wait until the next lot of graphics cards come out after the R420 etc. Paid £327 for a Hercules 9800 Pro 128mb card back in June, and now 9800XTs 256mb are under £300 now.

You mentioned a 9800 Pro or a 5700 Ultra. Well the 5700 will only just outperform a 9600 Pro, so you would only find it worth upgrading to a 9800 Pro or something like that.

I do however believe that ATI have a newer chipset for release fairly soon. The R420 is due out in the second quarter at some point. I'd be more tempted to wait for it and then get it if not stupidly expensive. And if it was stupidly expensive I would hopefully be able to get a cut price 9800 XT at the time.

9800 Pro's are good for about £180 these days. What are you doing with your old card?
