He swears by it though, and can easily show me up in CS:S so what do I know?
I used to play descent with the cursor keys in my right hand and my left hand in a diagonal line over caps-lock to roll left, a to move forward, z to move backwards, left Alt to roll right with my thumb on space to fire.
The key aspect of it being so usable was the strafe buttons (Z,X) which could be accessible all the time.
The game primarily revolved around tactical strafing and excellent aim, it was the control set that was used only by "teh 1337" players. You kind of earn it I guess, I went my game playing time from crap to being in the best clans recognised in the players league. To get in, you had to 'duel' with the clan boss, the only real way to defeat him was to use the proper control set and use it well.
Using default controls you would of been dead in an instant.
Gah, I'm going off on a tangent.
It was an amazing combination, pretty addictive game as well *weeps*
But really, WSAD is the daddy for most games.
Arrow keys - Direction of movement
Ctrl - Fire
Tab - Grenades (or 'nades as they were called)
Windows Key - Fire 2
Z - Strafe Left
X - Strafe right
It was the best button combination ever.
Ever
Go on, you know you want to place your hands on that keyboard to try it out.
Little finger - Ctrl
Ring finger - Windows key
Middle finger - Z
Index finger - X
Other hand carefully positioned on the arrow keys.
There.
But after that I moved to WASD like everyone else.
I remember getting a demo of Aliens vs Predator years ago, and still being in the arrow keys stage of my gaming life. I spent ages changing the controls to suit me, then got my face ripped off by a rather un-attractive alien while I tried to shoot at him by spraying bullets from left to right. He came accross the ceiling...
I think Soldier of Fortune was the first game I set to WASD, I even played Half Life with the arrow keys (but aiming with the mouse, I think, which is something I didn't do in AvP) It was either SOF or HL, but it did seem strange. Very strange. Only SkyNet/Futureshock was stranger (A forward, Z back, mouse to aim, it was revolutionary in its day)
Now it's WASD, F and G to lean left and right, backspace to dump a weapon/item, space to jump, control to crouch, z to get down, Q to scroll weapons. Same every game I play.
I remember having to press a mouse button for forward.
(of course i might have just clicked the wrong thing in the setup and i played like this for a while)
>Killian
That's very nearly the coolest name ever.
> Who me? Fear of the ASS I guess. Skillian (or skillian) is my nick,
> feel free to add me anyone.
omg! The friend I have who uses the freak-layout for controls is called Killian! That's like, your nick but with one less letter! omg!!
