In a project I'm theoretically building a small server based network, would an Athlon 64 3400 be good as the processor on this? What are the advantages of the intel Xeon etc? Does anyone recommend anything different?

ALl depends on what sort of traffic this server is going to have and what type of server it is going to be (i.e. Printer, file), At my work we have 3 Rack mounted 2U cases with Dual P4 Xeon CPU's (2mb L2 Cache), 2 gb DDR memory, Ultra SCSI 360 with 4 75gig drives per unit, We use it to run a Database which is logged onto from 2 other sites and constandly in use, it is also a sort of file server where we store most of our files, But if i had a server at home (which i will be doing soon) i am only going to use a P4 chip with Hypertheading and put loads of hard disk drives in it as it will be accessed only by a max of 3 other systems at a time, Also if you are going to use an athlon64 then you should use unix and set it up to run as a 64bit app.
