15-10-2001 for MGS2.
No idea when we might get it, but at least we have a rough idea of when someone, somewhere will get it
MGS on the PSX broke many gaming barriers, not just with graphics, detail and game engine, but with gameplay itself.
It defined the 'stealth' genre.
It had its predecessors on other consoles, but this was THE defining game for a whole generation of PSX gamers.
MGS was a classic in its own right, it's predecessors in the series paled in comparison.
Nothing like it had ever been seen before in the history of gaming, and it was one of the few games that left people with the real impression that the PSX had finally reached its limit. They simply could not believe that Sony's first console could be made to do any more.
On that basis alone, the sequel, Sons of Liberty, will sell in droves, I'm surprised they didn't make people preorder it.
Over the last few months our appetites have been whetted by the movie intro shown at various venues, which had journalists dropping their jaws and writing rave reviews which, whilst you can rightly suspect may just be selling copy, reading between the lines you could sense their excitement.
Screenshots and articles followed, and finally the demo disc gets released bundled with Zone of the Enders (cunning Sony, well done). ZOE IS a good game judging by the reviews, but Sony just made sure of its sales figures.
MGS2's demo disc has shown that the journalists weren't hyping, feedback from gamers and the industry itself indicate that another great game is on its way to the gaming community.
This time it won't be a new genre, it won't push the PS2 to its limits by a long shot, but ever since the first MGS game came out, gamers have clamoured for more.
There is an analogy with Tomb Raider here. TRII WAS hyped to the hilt, and WAS a dissappointment to many, but for those that loved the gameplay of the first TR, TRII was a treat that kept them glued to their screens for many further months. But TR was in no way as ground breaking as MGS was.
MGS is legendary. Even if MGS2 were just exactly the same graphics but with different levels, people would want it. But the demo has shown that MGS2 offers much more, and because it is using PS2 architecture it is capable of much more, and PS2 owners are expecting that.
MGS2 was previously always one of the reasons many people initially went for the PS2 as their next gen console, along with other titles in the pipeline like The Bouncer and Final Fantasy X. MGS2 is the game that most PS2 owners will buy that will stand out as the most played game in their collection so far, and will probably remain as the most played game for a long, long time to come.
So there is hype. But this time it's justified.
But, that won't happen.
MGS2 HAS been confirmed for 2001 in Europe, and I'm hoping for late October to early November.
> In fact, I'll state an exact date...
Friday 23rd November
No,

Thursday 22nd November would be more convenient for me because that's my birthday, however, I feel that this close to Christmas, we'd be more likely to see MGS 2 released for the PS2 on or around December 14th or December 21st, both highly profitable launch dates in the past.
