It has been a topic of discussion in this forums of late, and I would like to know if it is really possible to do so. I am a student, and if you are a student too, do post your age (if you wish) and your grade while replying.

Did anyone see the documentary about this?

A very long and interesting one.

According to it some have already traveled forward in time in a space flight-but being a few seconds it was of not much importance.

Slight problem, it breaks the primary rules of physics (and this is where I'd use italics if possible) as we know them currently. 100 years ago nuclear power was 'impossible'. The idea that men could build a machine that would fly under its own power likewise just over 100 years ago.

Have we reached the peak of scientific knowledge? I'd wager we're barely out of the index page let alone reading the book, metaphorically (obviously).

Here's a little time travel question and answer thingy for you:

An alien aged 20 earth years falls in love with a 20 year old on earth. After 1 year (spaceship time) the alien sends a message (radio) to the 20 year old earthling.

Q: How old is the eartling when the message arrives?

A: proper time interval = 1 year
however accounting for the speed of light taken as .998 times the speed of light as it is impossible to get exactly to 1, the earth years passed for each spaceship year is 15.82 years!

That means the 20 year old earthling is 35.82 years when the message is sent.

The radio signal travels at the speed of light. So the distance it travels is .998 multiplied by 15.82 years = 15.79 years, thats how long the message takes to get to earth.

Therefore the 20 year old earthling is 20years + 15.82years +15.79years

= approx. 51 years old!

If you did go back in time, you would most likely cause such a paradox that you wouldnt of done it in the first place.

Such as you go back in time and do one small thing that happens to stop you going back in time in the first place which means you wouldnt of stopped your self going back so you would of gone back, but you would of stopped your self. You see, one big paradox.

It just cant happen. You would most likely destroy the universe.
But it's never going to happen so what the hay, keep on dreaming.

It is conceivable that you could skip forwards in time, say by flying at speeds close to the velocity of light, but the idea of going back in time is illogical and surely impossible.

How could you reverse time, it would break one of the primary rules of physics - time is constant.

Now, if you were to fly 50 light years away from earth, instantly, and if you had a powerful enough telescope, you could view the events that took place 50 years ago, but you could not interact with them.

I presume you've read my post. Killing hitler is incredebly likely to create an impossible paradox, Plus, hitler didn't die, so going back in time would change nothing.

One day it might be possible to go backwards or forwards but in theory I'd wager that the technology would be deemed on par with Weapons of Mass Destruction.

While it's only really the stuff of sci fi anyway, I don't agree that it would be possible to do things like go back and kill Hitler to prevent the war, because people like that are only figureheads for something larger.

Kill Hitler and someone else would take his place, maybe someone who then goes on to let his generals command his forces (rather than Hitler's eventual incompetence) in 1944 thus ensuring D-Day fails (probably).

Plus a lot of technology came about because of the war, the absence of which would completely change the future because whilst it would probably still be developed the process would be slower.

I am drawn to laugh alot at your actual quesion "does any one actually know if its possible to time travel?"

It is so RARRGH i cant actually put down in words my anger at that rediculous question.

Muh, you guys are really wrong (probably)

Time travel is perfectly possible to be invented, because anything that has happened, stays happened. If someone goes back in time to stop jesus being crusified, they will proably end up giving him in without knowing it. Or if they went back to shoot hitler, they would screw up and become part of something else, most likely.

It is impossible to change history.

Besides which, logically, if future humans can time travel, surely future-future humans would go back in time to stop them anyway.

That's right, though out in the real world things are gradually turning into America. Still, at least there aren't as many obese people over here.
