Usually watched on a Sunday after a Saturdays boozing, heres some short reviews on the movies I’ve watched in the past two or three weeks. (I’m bored)

Star ratings out of 5, my personal opinions, so if you want to argue about them, I won’t care enough to change them or justify myself.

“Brotherhood of the Wolf” – A costume drama has a steamy threesome with Tim Burtons “Sleepy Hollow”, a Hong Kong martial arts flick and “Robin hood: Prince of Thieves” and produces offspring. Quite a fun little flick, let down a little by the average beast CGI (its too bright, and doesn’t fit the background quite correctly) and the fights which are edited by a chainsaw wielding maniac. ****

“Bumfights” – American kids (and in some cases, adults) knocking seven bells out of each other, tramps getting tattooed on their foreheads, running into fast food menu boards and generally deliberately hurting themselves, crack addicts and dealers and other assorted lowlifes. Strangely hypnotic. The only problem with this is the “Bumhunter” section where someone impersonates that mad aussie bloke (Steve Erwin?) and ties unsuspecting tramps up. This is not consensual, and therefore leaves a bad taste in the mouth as you can see that these poor people are terrified. Still, the remaining two thirds of the video is class. ***

“Amelie” – How a romantic comedy should be made. Warm, emotional and beautiful. I’m not a massive Romcom fan, but this is a great and extremely funny movie, which I’ll be watching again soon. *****

“Delicatessen” – similar feel to “Amelie” (same director) and quite possibly the best SF / Romantic Comedy / post apocalyptic / arthouse movie concerning cannibalism I’ve seen ;) *****

(spoilers)
“28 days Later” – Great zombie flick (I don’t care what Boyle says, they are basically zombies) again let down by some silly parts. Why does Jim go into the garage? Oh, that’ll be so we can see that he is capable of killing, so the ending transformation wont come as a complete shock. Why did Frank pile his taxi over the barracked? Oh, that’ll be a cheap way to inject some tension in the film as they frantically try to change the flat tire.

Still, Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, digital video, an empty London, loads of blood being puked and thumbs in eye sockets. Grand genre movie. ****

(/spoilers)

“Fellowship of the ring / The Two Towers” – Extended versions. Need I explain? Classics, although its surprising how bad the forced perspective looks in fellowship now. **** / *****

“Solaris” – slow, thoughtful “hard” SF. An examination of love and indifference, conscience and guilt, and science and morality. Excellent. I love this movie more that “Gattaca” *****
