Beyond surfing the net, playing online games, email, acting as a server, what else is there?

Zilch increase when I tested it.

Define useful. Like browse the internet and download files? Thats pretty useful, and to which the firewall makes no difference in speed. But, for online games I do turn the Firewall off due to the amount of times ot tries to block the signals and the 10ms-20ms it adds to my pings.
And ZoneAlarm increased my latency by 50ms.

Norton doesn't noticabley slow my connection or my PC, and came free with my motherboard so didn't cost me anything either. I also have complete control over my connection and it is not resticted at all. Also, as Notorious Biggles said, it can stop your programs from spying on you, and it can be used to block gator indefinitly (which is a plus).
And the other great thing about Zonealarm? It keeps Real Player and various spyware under control by simply not allowing them to access the net.
No, I've never lost documents. But I could have. There is a chance of it. And for no distinguishable loss in performance, it is just as well to not take that chance.
I've never known a professional to recommend NOT using a firewall. Your on your own in that regard.

Yes, I know that, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

NO for Christ's sake it DID NOT, it just reported something that could have been a hack - what it doesn't say that the proportion of them that are actually hacking attempts and not a common all-garden scan is one in millions!
Firewalls breed fear and paranoia in fools like you because the more scared you are the more you spend on this trash!
