Ive just started my own band with a few mates of mine and everything started out great. We can all play reasonably, some better than others. We have a place to practice. and our singer can actually sing too.

The problem ive now got is that we've been doing covers when we practice. We have written one song but thats it. and its not even that good.

so what im after is some tips on writing songs.

also feel free to post about your own bands and how great they are etc.

I think I could write lyrics, it's just the music that throws me.

More guitar play is needed. I've not bothered for a while, but I really wanna write my own stuff.

well im crap at guitar (i play bass in the band) so its hard for me to put music to my lyrics when i write them so i can never tell what they are going to sound like.

All of my attempts end up cheesy with the obvious sort of rock lyrics people would expect.

Our songs spawn from the 6-string guitarists (myself and some other guy. You just need to find a riff or a chord progression you think sounds cool and then take it to practise. Play it to the others. Play it over and over so that the drummer, bassist and other guitarist can find parts to go with or over your piece. Now you need to find other parts that go with it or say what you want to do with this piece. Do you want it to be an intro, chorus or verse section, what? Then build more parts around it and repeat the process. In Finelines, the vocals come last in the mix, but the vocalist is always there giving his advice so that we always write vocal-friendly songs.

Hope that helps!

tips. when you write you have to start out with a idea of what youre writing about come up with a good idea and build around it.most important is patience when you have written something put it away hide it for a while look at it a couple of weeks later youll be able to judge it better.so many times ive written something thought it was brilliant and then gone back later and thought "utter crap"

ive been trying to write songs for about 18 months, ive completed one and ive got bits and pieces of probably around 40 incomplete songs, really i need a songwriting partner to bounce ideas off, because im far too critical of my own work.im also trying to find a piano so i can learn to play and put music to what ive got because i cant sing.
