Whats it like?
The three skill levels are bound to add longevity (though I've only tried 'medium' so far, so I don't know what changes - enemy health, numbers, firepower, or, if it's a true next gen title - AI), as will the bonus missions. The playable characters are OK, though have a very distinctly 90s teen America attitude. Also Nym could almost be Chef from South Park (hey.... South Park Starfighter sounds like a good idea ;-) ). The Star Wars 'feel' is there (mainly through the stirring soundtrack - one thing they didn't screw up in Episode One, and the occasional bleep from your R2 style unit). But from what I've played so far (up to mission 6), it really seems more like a Colony Wars mod. Great fun, but not quite Star Wars. Also in the earlier missions it felt like all I was doing was shooting things, with no real reason. Though mission 6 ups the ante a bit, with some basic strategy involved. Something else that has been missing so far is a recurring 'baddie'. It would be nice to have a Boba Fett or Darth Maul style character to encounter on and off throughout the game. But I haven't come across one yet.
So that's my initial thoughts. It's definitely *not* supposed to be a review - any game needs more than one evening of play to give a good overview. I'm hoping there are still some surprises up SWS's sleeves yet.
The graphics are incredible. Everything runs at a smooth and fast pace, detail is staggering - You can see dents on the side of some ships, explosions are great. The use of lighting is excellent, the draw distance goes back for miles, there is so much free space to glide around - It is a true next generation game in terms of visuals. The cut scenes are put to good use and are almost seamless to the in game graphics. Sound effects are identical and most of the music from The Phantom Menace plays away in the background.
I would go as far as saying this is the best PS2 game to date, every Star Wars fan should play this, you wont be disappointed!!
