CDs play higher quality FMV's, It can play higher quality sound, It is cheaper and can hold larger games than Carts. Yet Carts also have strong advantages. It doesn't need loading, They are very versatile and the system used to run them do not break down as easily.
Now most of you will say that CDs are the best but I disagree. CDs and Carts are just as good as each other but should be used in different ways. CDs are the best for home consoles as they have the capabilities to produce the highest quality of games. But Carts are probably the safest to use for Hand held devices such asd the Gameboy.
This is because they take up less space, Many people play the Gameboy for a quick go and there is no room for loading and traveling puts these games through many knocks and bumps and Carts are the more versatile format.
This shows that Carts and CD's are both in their own right an excellent format in which to play games but should be used in different ways so please don't say goodbye to Carts just yet.
Carts are better beause of no loading, full stop. (better graphics as well, massive and durible)
No, no, no!
The reason that NO ONE uses carts to store games on any more is beacuse of the small storage space. Especially when compared to CD's or more appropriatly DVD's.
Also the graphics depend on the console itself - not the storage medium, more complex graphics require more space - simple as that.
CD's enable a developer to add FMV, music, better sound effects, voice acting - the list is endless. It's all a question of space!
In defence of the cart, however, loading time is practically zero (not totally though!) and they are much more durable and reliable. But they are more expensive to make than CD's and now that the last bastion of cartridges (Nintendo) has switched to mini-DVD's the cart is dead as a main storage medium for games.
I guess we'll all have to take better care of out CD's etc.
it's the same for all kinds of CD, Cd's get scracthed now and again but cartridges can be stepped on.
Forget about that and think that CD's are a top idea to use in games the N64 suffered without using CD's if they had Square would be on the N64 right now but everybody seems to go for CD's this time with the machines RAM improving some loading times are decreased.
As you can see, there is not one Next-Gen console that will be restricted to carts. This is a wise decision by the companies and one that will make the console wars even better!
Carts are good though, they are durable and they look a lot more like a computer games, carts are the foundation on which all gaming was based. Although the PSX wasn't the first CD console, it was the machine that revolutionised the gaming.
Overall CD's are the best and with Nintendo releasing games on Optical Discs it will be good to see how they fare against the DVDs and CD's of the past and present!
However Nintendo wanted all the cut sequences to be as gameply graphics so that it's quicker getting back into the action (unlike TWINE)
Carts are better than CD's cos the battery backed ones can hold save games and you don't need extra peripherals for save games then!
They are also faster for instant access to the game!
