So why do we have religion then?

Well, the amazing yet primitive human brain, corrupted with dellusions of its species own grandiose, cannot grasp the simple concept that we are the result of a coincidence of millions of events, which although seemingly miraculous, is in fact just another example of the diversity of the cosmos. To believe we are anything more is nothing but spiritual arrogance.

And to denounce such diversity and beauty, and squander our intelligence, by pledging our allegiance to none-existant super-beings, should be a crime.

Thank you

And feel free to chew the fat as it were.

There are still many things that science can't explain, and who's to say that science won't one day prove the existence of God. It isn't so Black and White as some people make out, science does not in itself disprove the existence of a prime being that created the universe as we see it, though it doesn't prove it either.

People who don't believe in something because science hasn't proved it are being blinkered against how science itself actually works.

People 'discover' new scientific fact every day, some of it contradicting older facts which were previously set in stone. There are many things for science still to discover, otherwise scientists would be out of a job! So just because something has not be scientifically proven doesn't mean that it can't exist. Of course, things can be disproven by science, but occassionally these are then turned on their head in future generations by new discoveries. We live in a world where nothing is certain, however concrete it may seem.

And who makes the rules? Also, Religion acts as a moral guide, even without the spiritual side. A very large percentage of the religious population of this planet do not want war or believe their God(s) wishes them to do harm to others, it is the minority that you see in the media. Banning religion would be effectively saying that you are not free to believe in what you want and this is against free will.

Try saying the word 'allegory', it sums the answer to this question up. There are, of course, many interpretations of the Adam and Eve story, including the fact that the story is translated, with the original words being 'ages' instead of 'days', therefore 6 days to create the world becomes 6 ages. There are other ways to interpret this, including the fact that this story merely represents the beginning of time in a way that humans can understand it.

I don't believe in any religious story. I enjoy "religeous" celebrations (Christmas and Easter) Purely because they are tradition. I read my son bible stories purely because they are often good stories and have a good moral meaning. I do not make a point to say they are not true but then I don't say they are either. He can make his own mind whether to beleive or not.

I personally only believe in science. When we die we are gone. we go in the ground and rot - just the same a leaf!!

I personally can't believe "intelligent" people still believe in god. In the dark ages religion was the obvious answer to all questions. Why are we here. Where did we come from. Etc. God wanted it that was.

Religion should be banished - nowadays all the religion or spiritual guidance should be found in our selfs we all have a concience and this is what should guide us through life. If we think its wrong we should decide not to do it. Not blame GOD for misguiding us.

Oh yeah and if adam and eve where created on the fourth day (ish?) then where the hell to dinosaurs come into it??

I'd like to take this opportunity to apologise if I offend any religious people, I just like to tell it the way I see it, after all, I think that the meaning of religion is purposefully vague, and leaves far too many unanswered questions.

I hate unanswered questions, and find it almost impossible to take things like this purely on faith - if I can't get my head round it, I can't just take it for granted.

Each to their own though so it is.

The thing is, scientists know so much about the universe and the way it works, but they also know that amounts to very little in the grand scheme of things. Also they know fine well that there is no scientific proof of evolution. There just isn't any.

Take a look around. The universe is amazing. There are so many thousands of variables, each and every one of which if less precisely set would make life impossible. Things like the distance of the earth from the sun, a little closer and the atmosphere would be too hot, a little further and there would be a permanent ice age. Or something like the speed at which the universe expanded. A million millionth ( a trillionth) part slower and gravitional forces would have caused the universe to collapse within a thousand million years.

The day that A) someone can give a proper explanation as to where the energy needed in the big bang came from and B) someone creates actual life out of inanimate, non biological elements.

I do believe in a big bang. I just also believe that there is a God who provided the perfect design and power for it all. I just cannot believe it all happened because of chance.

"It is strictly and philosophically true in nature and reason that there is no such thing as chance or accident; it being evident that these words do not signify anything really existing, anything that is truly an agent or the cause of any event; but they signify merely men's ignorance of the real and immediate cause." --Samuel Clark

How can you know so much about the chemical makeup of water and the physics of reflection still be amazed by the sun shining on the sea?

How can you know so much about the human brain and chemical reactions and still fall in love?

So to live in a world ruled by you we should not be free to believe what we wanted? And they said Saddam set harsh rules...hm....

Interesting, if highly biased opinion, though.

A documentary about time travel on bbc2 now. I started to watch it, until the word 'God' was mentioned, then I turned it off.

the weirdest thing is, one of the people I look up to - Stephen Hawking, one of the finest scientists in the UK, a professor of Physics and Astrophysics, mentions in his books about how he believes in God and all that is taught in the christian religion. Einstein believed in god also. How can you know so much about the physical universe, yet still believe in such a fantastic theory? (fantastic as in difficult to believe, not as in amazing) hmmmmm
