I'm generally all for it, having been almost knocked off my bike by people driving and using mobiles on a number of occasions.

But is there really any point?

You can't hold the phone in your hand and dial, but you can have it in a cradle on the dashboard and dial. Does that really make any difference?

Personally, if someone is going to use a mobile, I'd rather a driver had both hands on the wheel and was dialling with their thumb than only having one hand on the wheel.

Aside from that, is using a mobile any worse than any other action which distracts a driver, such as changing a CD/tape or fiddling with the volume or radio tuner?

Or eating a choccy bar/drinking a can of Coke?

Some say that talking on a mobile can be distracting even with a hands-free kit, but is it any different to talking to a passenger in the car?

On the one hand I don't think the law goes far enough, but on the other hand I don't see how you can legislate against mobile use unless you do the same for a multitude of other things that can distract a driver just as much.

The police can pretty much have you for anything that looks like it would endanger other people. Hopefully that should include flicking cigerette butts out the window as well.

Most phones now have a hands-free option which lets you automatically accept calls when the phone is plugged in to the hands-free kit, stopping the need for pressing any buttons. My phone is currently set up like this and has a magnet to attach it to the dashboard. It works pretty well too, though I don't get too many calls to my mobile anyway.

Phoning someone else while you drive is just plain stupid though, in the last 2 weeks I've seen at least 5 drivers on the road with a mobile stuck to their ear still. Which goes to show you can pass a law but it's worthless unless you enforce it...

I was gonna say that but didn't want to cause offence.

Good, God I hate this law.

Ok, put it THIS way. If you are driving along with the phone to your ear you will get a £30 fine.

If you're driving badly you will probably get "done" for something else.

The guy on the news said that you can call other people as long as the phone is in the cradle and you only need to use your fingertips.

Was he wrong?

Ok-ok, here’s the rules people.

If you are using a mobile phone in your vehicle, it MUST be in a cradle. If it is not in a cradle you commit an offence. It is likely that if you have the phone on your passenger seat and are using a hands-free kit you will be let off, as this shows you are at least trying to not use your hands.

You may only operate the, “accept call”, button while driving, any more then this and you are in trouble. Should you need to use the phone in your hand you must pull the vehicle over and turn off the engine.

The main aim of the new laws are to stop “texting” at the wheel.

Waste. Of. Time.

Gives us no power we didn’t already have, just gives it a new name and confuses everyone.

By-the-by, all comments you said about eating and such, I agree, but you can also be "done" for such things. Due care and all that. The only thing the phone law is doing is saying they don't have to be driving badly for you to "do" them.

Who cares?

We could “get” them for control of the vehicle anyway!

I believe that the police will have the power to charge drivers for driving dangerously if they feel that they are not concentrating fully on the road.

I agree though that in a way some of the things seem a little weird but hopefully it will stop all the morons I see on the road driving on phones and driving like fools.

I think it is a great rule. My sister actually got knocked over by a man driving along on his mobile. I was not there but apparently he had no concentration on the road and only one hand on the wheel. So it will mean that the driver has both hands on the wheel.

However, you are right, they will still have that element of distraction and not be puttng their full attention to the road, as they should be.

So mainly I am for the law, but there will always be the point of distraction that I guess you can't get rid of without banning total use of phones.
