I was nervous too, at first. Just remember, though, that you'll be around as the kid grows up so it won't be like you'll just meet them at their 10th birthday or something.
My nephew is 15 and he's a typical teenager but because I've been there as he's grown up and I'm not a parent we have a good relationship ... and he laughs at *all* my jokes!
I also have two neices who are 13 and 4 years old - they're both groovy, too.
