Just wondering as it has never crossed my mind before...

1) Why do we yawn?

and

2) How come other people yawn around you after you yawn.

cheers

Yawning is for stimulation. It's done when you're tired, or in need of a change of activity.

The contagious effect is conformism... originally the alpha male would yawn, thus signalling his desire to change activity. Others in the pack would then yawn, in a show of support.

The instinctive reaction hasn't left us.

I dont think it actually dislocates the jaw, unless you're a supper yawner. But every time some one yawns it usually makes an odd clicking sound.

I don't think it is coincidence. I made a conscious effort to watch those around me whenever I yawned, and most of the time, so did they.

it's contagious I tell ya.

You yawn to create a sudden inlet of oxygen into your blood to stimulate you momentarily if you are tired.

Um, they just do :S

If you do it too much and too big like on a plane trying to pop your ears you can dislocate your jaw.
