The contagious effect is conformism... originally the alpha male would yawn, thus signalling his desire to change activity. Others in the pack would then yawn, in a show of support.
The instinctive reaction hasn't left us.

I dont think it actually dislocates the jaw, unless you're a supper yawner. But every time some one yawns it usually makes an odd clicking sound.

I don't think it is coincidence. I made a conscious effort to watch those around me whenever I yawned, and most of the time, so did they.
