**There's a story behind this story, which I'll share in a day or so, might make a bit more sense then**

I don’t know what hurt me more, the fact that he hit me, or that it caused Jess to fall from my hold onto the floor. I watched in horror as she fell, her squeal resonating through me. I was so relieved when she landed safety. I could believe that way she seemed to flip round at the last moment, I was so sure that she was going to land on her head and be killed for sure.

The second I knew that she wasn’t hurt I turned by attention back to him. How could he do this to me? For so long I had offered him shelter and protection. None of the others that have been and gone had ever done anything like that to me. Yes, there have been many over the years. Some flashy and good looking, some battered and blue, some young ones and some ready for the scrap heap. Some came close to hitting me before, I have to admit, there have been times when I’ve seen them coming at me, only to stop at the last minute, but not this time, a hefty blow, shaking me to my roots.

Of course, he’ll say it was an accident, that he didn’t mean to hit me, that he couldn’t help it, and maybe he’ll be telling the truth, but I can’t live like that. I’m not as young as I used to be, and I’m not about to accept this kind of treatment now. Perhaps this will be the end of the road for him. Maybe he’ll move on after this. They never ask me to come with them, but I wouldn’t go if they did. I’m not the kind to just uproot and go traipsing across the country.

It’s not like he cares about Jess either. I’m sure that I’ve seen him try to hit her too. Thankfully she’s quick on her feet, and manages to avoid him when he’s in a hurry, that’s when he’s at his worst.

Hopefully this won’t affect the way Jess treats me. I couldn’t bare it if she no longer wants to be with me. I find such comfort when she is curled asleep on me. I love the way she softly purrs as she relaxes in my branches. If only that damn car hadn’t have hit me…

ooh, metaphorical trickery.

Can you update us some time with how you're getting along with writing/your life etc? I'm interested in the least.

Sussed out Jess as a cat but thought 'he' was a bigger, possibly older cat. Didn't see the twist so nicely done.

Can't wait for the reason behind the story - have you been beating up on trees?

Okay, here's the story behind this story...

I go to a writing course on a Tuesday evening. Last week we were looking at the short story market in the weekly magazines.

The course tutor had a copy of 'Take a Break' and it's writer's guidelines. Here are the first three. (May not be word for word, but it will be close.)

* Do not send us a story in which your narrator, hero or heroine turns out to be a cat.
* Do not send us a story in which your narrator, hero or heroine turns out to be a tree.
* Do not send us a story in which your narrator, hero or heroine turns out to be a car.

So of course, I had to try to write a story in which the narrator turns out to be a tree, and the other characters are a cat and a car.

As for how the writing is going, I think I'm improving. I have been paid for something I've written, £20 for a review. I'm learning plenty from the course I'm doing, and will give the articles to magazines another crack now that I know how to approach it.

I've just finished a short story for a Christmas Chiller competition which I'll post after results are out, I don't want to get it disqualified by 'publishing' it elsewhere.

I'm reading much more now than I was a year ago too.

The only problem is work. Whilst I could get away with slacking off and writing during the day a year or so ago, I've now got a bunch of crap to do. So I have to make time during the evenings to get on with things, so it's just a couple of evenings a week that I can get on with things.

Ahh...

Well I'm glad for you in getting somewhere with the writing, at the very least you gave it a go. I await your next with pleasure.

Tree. Did not see that one coming! :-)

With rules like that, they're just ASKING for it!

I wonder what sort of stories people were coming up with to force the publishers to come up with those rules.
The same way you wonder why the Old Testament had to tell people that they shouldn't have intercourse animals and relatives... :-S

LOL! Fantastic, I really did laugh out loud when I read that.

Can't believe that it won me GAD, I'm very pleased with that. Very pleased indeed. :o) and \o/
